My step trash can wasn’t opening the lid high enough, turns out on YouTube it says it’s because the step is cracked and you need to plastic weld it together. I don’t have a plastic welder and made me think wtf is the minimum tools for a home? I was thinking hammer wrench and a screw driver. You guys have welders?

JB Weld or Gorilla Glue.

Both have lots of options for types of materials.

Why didn’t your dad teach you this?

Pretty sure you're plenty enough of a tool for any household.

You gotta drill holes and stitch it with zip ties...or I guess buy a plastic welder

Go to Harbour Freight and get the deluxe one. That way it has the attachments that let you bedazzle your denim jacket and jeans.

The average home doesn’t need a welder, plastic or otherwise. If it can’t be fixed with gorilla glue and a shim, just buy a new one.

Oh and you don’t already have a hammer, wrenches, or screwdrivers?

Right? He’s an Aggie so you know he’s got two of them.

You should have at a minimum a basic set of tools and a decent cordless drill.

Hammer
Battery powered drill w drill bits and screwdriving bits
A set of Phillips and Flathead screwdrivers
Several types of pliers (Needle Nose, Slipjoint, etc..)
Adjustable wrench
Level
Tape Measure
A set of hex wrenches in Metric and SAE
Stud finder is handy, you can get little magnetic ones for a few bucks
Think about the things you are most likely to have to do/repair and build your toolbox based on that.

All of this will fit in a small toolbox

Screwdrivers, SAE and metric sockets and wrenches, drill and drill bits, hammer and a few pairs of pliers will go a long way.

But I say that as someone who "collects" tools and probably has $40-50k in tools.

ETA--My pro tip woodworking tool that is not stupid expensive, is made in the USA, will last a lifetime and get you hooked on nice tools is a Lie-Nielsen "102 low angle block plane. A little work of art made of brass that I use on nearly EVERY project.

A claw hammer
A couple sets of slip joint pliers. One straight jaw set and another set with the angled head.
An adjustable wrench, generally in a couple of different sizes.
A couple of Vise-Grip type pliers
A good set of screwdrivers that include both Phillips and slotted screwdrivers.
A set of Allen keys
A water meter turn off tool
Wire cutters/flush cutters
Zip ties
Duct tape and electrical tape
Roll of Bailing wire
Set of needle nose pliers
A couple quick clamps (very handy in a lot of situations)
Electric drill with drill bits, a bit holder and various sized bit sizes.
A chainsaw for fallen branches/clearing debris
A socket set that contains Metric and SAE sizes and has things in both 3/8 and 1/4 drive sizes.
A decent set of combination wrenches in SAE and Metric sizes
A level
A tape measure
Stud finder

That's a starter kit IMO.

I don't have a welder but my dad does so I can borrow his if needed.
My bare minimum tools are a hammer, screwdriver set, pliers, wrench set, and cordless drill.

Anything can be a hammer if you need one bad enough.

Just go buy this at HF for $40. Sure the quality is kinda junk, but it's not like you're Tim the Toolman Taylor. Maybe you could get one for your Husband for fathers day...

PITTSBURGH Tool Set with Case, 130-Piece

(I have one of these in each of my vehicles and it's saved my backside more than once...)
