It’s an old word that meant something different that the people who use it incorrectly now have no knowledge of. They’ve added to/changed its definition now to be more “inclusive” to the people that use it now. Tale as old as time.

Completely new words don't bother me. Mispronouncing long established words simply exposes ones ignorance but pronouncing silent letters makes my skin crawl. More pacifically my ex who would pronounce the "L" in salmon.
