This myth is intended to address anxiety.
There's no such thing as a place or realm that lasts forever, no less a place in which humans go after death and have fresh bodies, white outfits and see relatives. It's a story.
For childish people.
It's not even close to how things operate.
The premise that you get there (to this perfect place) just by faith in the efficacy of the murder of the "son of God the Creator" is false teaching.

I watch physics / astronomy documentaries. I enjoy them immensely. I understand less than 1% of what is being said.

The wild part about this, and I agree with you btw, is that as far as we are concerned and capable of understanding: there was no "before" the universe existed. It was simply nothing. There was no reality in essence. Time is not 100% linear, so you can't say with confidence that it has a beginning. You also cannot accurately predict that it will end at some point.
If humans are the only beings of his universe with a consciousness and the ability to be self aware as we are taught by religion(s), will the universe still exist without us here to observe it?
If God created the universe that we live in, where was he before he created it? If God exists at all, he is an interdimensional being capable of traveling to / from our dimension at will, and we know that there is at LEAST 1 other dimension in existence. Is our soul what comes from his dimension to this one to control our bodies? Do we go back when we die? Does our consciousness, which appears to be separate from any part of our body, survive our death? If so, where does it go? If not, where does the energy it takes for us to exist go? If not, then what the frick is the point of anything really?
If your soul is the controller of your body that lives on, then you almost have to agree that yes, we are in a simulation designed by a "god" at least to some degree right?
Your one thought there spider webs into so many other fascinating and uncomfortable tangents of thought that I could talk about it all night with the right company.

quote:i also almost said this. the universe will end. its billions of years away, but it will end. no matter what happens, in the grand scheme of things, life does not matter at all. there will be a point in time when all of existence will no longer exist as it does now and any and all shreds of life in our universe will be gone for all of eternity
If humans are the only beings of his universe with a consciousness and the ability to be self aware as we are taught by religion(s), will the universe still exist without us here to observe it?

Or liberating as all frick. Your reality is 100% in your perception of it, because "real" is only something that is observed by an individual and then agreed upon by others. That in itself does not make it real in the literal sense.
Enjoy the insignificance. Find beauty in the chaos, and ride the spiral of this mortal coil to the end. At your end, you will either not exist, or all will be made clear. Both completely invalidate what happened before that point.

If God isn't real, who created the universe?

I don't think this is an absolute certainty. I don't believe we can say for certain that the universe has a beginning or an end. Maybe you were just saying that is your belief. Either way, the universe, multi-verses, space/time, etc., all fascinates me and makes my head hurt at the same time

Not if there are only two dimensions. The analogy is about two dimensions, our understanding of three dimensions makes the analogy somewhat less useful, but three dimensional space can also be curved from what I understand of the current state of science.
But I get in over my head really fast when it comes to cosmology.

1 galaxy has an estimated 100 billion stars in itself. Look at the pictures Hubbell telescope sends back of just the area it looks at and try counting the galaxies. Will make your mind hurt how big it all is and how true it is.
Also, if each of those stars have planets orbiting them, which I think is the consensus if I am not mistaken, chances of life outside of our planet I'd have to say is almost a sure thing. Might only be microbial but would not shock me at this point.
Oldest star we can confirm at this point is about 6,000 light years away from us at estimated 13.6 billion years old. They assume our galaxy is pretty darn old as well at 13.2 billion years. Are we possibly one of the most advanced species in the known universe?

Who am I? Am I my brain? Or am I something separate from my brain that uses the brain as a tool to experience this reality? Or am I neither? Is this feeling of “I” an illusion? What does reality look like outside the lens of our eyes and brains? If we changed the lens by which we perceive this reality, could we see something like just strings of energy bouncing all over the place?
Will “I” ever experience anything again after my life here is done? Have “I” experienced things before this life? If so, does the time between my lives feel like an instant? Such that I could have been a caveman hundreds of thousands years ago, died, and feel like the next moment I was born in 1987 as a modern human?
Surprised the mysteries of consciousness was this far down the thread.
