I'll add cooking, made up a fantastic batch of japanese curry the other night that my kids absolutely destroyed and the ingredients were potatoes, onions, carrots, golden curry and water. You might say that cooking can become prohibitively expensive but so can any hobby like you're finding out with MTG.

Tennis

Public courts everywhere. Just need a racket and some balls. Most places have local leagues that are cheap as well.

People watching in your neighborhood, park, the mall, etc… and keep a written log of your observations and routines of said people.

Yep, good hobby. Can be done indoors, not that expensive (relatively) and is pretty fulfilling.

Photography.

You can get a nice DSLR and a couple of lenses from Amazon for under $1,000.

Playing darts. For about $150 or so you can pick up a new dart board, a set of decent darts, a backboard to mount the dart board to and a simple dry erase scoreboard to keep score of the game.

The cost for weed and tall boys of Natty Light start adding up though...

Hiking?
My son, who is 51, and is Son, hiked 16 miles, last week, in the Smokey Mountains.

My hobby, when I was a younger man, and there was plenty of wild game, was raising and hunting beagles.
I know listening to a dog bark is not for everyone. Its a dying sport.
But, you got exercise and had the company of like minded individuals.
