I only met a handful during my years in Oz, and did not know any well. I can only relay some observations.

I can draw some parallels between the Aborigines and American Indians. The Aborigines do not live on reservations per se, but many live in government built and funded communities. The one I saw first hand on a number of occasions was the Jervis Bay Territory. It was exactly as you would imagine any community that was completely on the government dime. Houses falling apart. Trash everywhere. Shops looking like the Triple S.

There is a high amount of drug abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence, and petty and violent crime in the communities. Very high unemployment, but why work when you are on government support? The victim mentality is through the roof. Everything is the white man's fault, stolen land, etc.

Honestly, probably the reason I never saw many Aborigines or knew any is because they stick to their own communities. I saw very few outside of the government communities and the surrounding area.

I didn't see very many of Aborigines when I worked in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. The only kangaroo I saw down under was a dead one along the highway.

What I saw when in Australia and in Aboriginal areas was very much like being near a reservation in the US. But worse. The Australians I talked with in those areas just don't like them. The younger city Australians (ie no experience) are guilt ridden and romanticize the Aborigines but the people who live near them just avoid them. So I did the same. Everything I saw matches your post.

Supposedly they have the lowest IQ average of any "group" in the world.

There is a great study out there that broke down average IQ for thousands of different groups all across the world. Iirc the top was dominated by Asians, not Chinese, and European jews.

“Abo” is the same thing as the n-word to them.

There is some discussion/debate that they are actually a race to themselves. Causacoid, Mongoloid, Negroid and Austroloid.

There are two movies named "the gods must be crazy 1 & 2" that are a great documentary of the culture of the Aborigines.

As far as modern society is concerned, they are considered under achievers.
