Your overall premise is that we need to go to the moon to setup a base.

Absolutely.

quote:

You realize how much that would cost? Probably close to a trillion dollars. Then add on the maintenance on top of that... I highly doubt the ROI is worth it.

NASA’s current budget is lower than the national ink budget. Literally. Sorry, but it’s very much worth the dime. As soon as AI is fully functional, do you know how valuable those asteroids nearby will be? They just drop the cargo into Earth’s orbit, but you want to launch a minimum from Earth until we have a space elevator, which is at best 50 years away. We need to get the ball rolling now and get a leg up on every other country.

A century from now barring nuclear holocaust, who is controlling space will be controlling the world. I see it no differently in how a visionary in the early 1500s should see the New World. But hey, we got the French, the Italians, and the Portuguese to worry about. Those lives spent mining something that will take years to get back aren’t worth it.

quote:

Obviously NASA doesn't think it's a priority either.

NASA doesn’t have a budget to speak of. As I said, the national ink budget is higher than theirs. So don’t talk to me about NASA priorities when they can’t get any of theirs done. We are currently relying on Russia to get to space. If there’s something more embarrassing than us not going back to the Moon, it is relying on the Russians to get into low Earth orbit.

We’ve been to the moon using unmanned robots. It’s easier that way.

Which is why I’m begging for the Chinese to go. That would be one of the best things to happen to civilization in quite some time.

We'd need a good reason to go back for one it's highly expensive and pretty dangerous to send people to the moon. Maybe if we had plans to set up a base camp or terraform the Moon it'd make sense to go back.

We are putting way more money and effort into getting people on Mars instead

seriously, we havent even explored half the ocean bottoms yet and until we can do that we arent in much condition to be exploring space.

How will we do that, and what’s the value of doing that? I’m always curious, and if we can control the geothermal core of our planet through this, obviously I’m for it. But the potential and gravity of exploring the cosmos is clearly on another level. We need to be on another rock, and having a permanent settlement on the Moon is the second step. It’s humiliating there’s been over 50 years between those steps.

Right on.

Remember all those other countries that landed on the moon?

What is the point of going back? Other than spending an enormous amount of money for something that benefits no one.

Helium-3, gold, platinum group metals, and rare earth metals. If you could mine it is worth trillions and trillions of dollars and not very deep. And Helium-3 may be the future for energy production.

I’m sure you know how many people died securing Europe. It’d be far less relatively speaking. Yes people will die for this, and I’d like to say I’d be willing to be one of them. I would have little fear in trying to pursue this vision. I’m very passionate about it if you can’t tell. I just hope I’d be mentally stable enough to undertake it, which is a very pressing issue on the future of our space program.

My point is these two are completely intertwined. Mars can be terraformed, but I think the Moon is an essential step for that happening.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson often cites this.

Even if it’s comparable... that’s pretty horrifying given what NASA has produced to society at large. For every dollar spent on NASA it’s at a minimum estimated that seven dollars have been returned. The top end on that estimate is 14 dollars returned. And if you doubt me, look at what device in which you are replying to me. That is a result of NASA engineering.

I don't think we know enough about things to just carry excavators to the moon and start mining for shite. What if the tides start doing crazy catastrophic damage?

That would take more mining than we’ve done in all of human history. Taking a few million tons from the Moon in mining isn’t going to do shite. A blue whale weighs 200 tons. Do you think removing them from the Earth would affect gravity?

EDIT: I thought you were blzr. Sorry for the idiot comment.

I didn't call anyone an idiot. There's some things I'd feel more comfortable not fricking with. Maybe that makes me the idiot.

Already posted before I saw the edit.
