What % of the American canine biomass is now pit bull?

There are, what, 200 "recognized" dog breeds? Let's just take the Top 100 of those that people can choose from. You'd think there might be some kind of even distribution. That is to say, you might imagine that even a wildly popular breed might be only 3-5% of the population tops.
But I'm not exaggerating when I say that any type of public setting where there are dogs (trails, neighborhood sidewalks, etc.) it seems like AT LEAST 20% are pit bulls - and sometimes up to 50%. Am I imagining this? If not, when the hell did this happen?

Any percentage is too high

About the same time getting tattoos became mainstream. Being trashy is cool now.

Hell, go try to pick out a dog at a shelter these days.

The better question is what percentage of the ‘human’ population in this country is low-functioning enough to consider owning such an animal.
I’ve given this a lot of thought but I think the obesity epidemic ultimately causes cognitive problems.

You are focusing on and remembering the pits more.

and its not even just the public, the news runs stories they just assign pit bull as a "type" of dog in stories with no real regard for exactly what the dog is. its the equivalent of the term "assault weapon" or "military style weapon" when talking about firearms. yes, there are specific specifications for what makes an assault rifle and there are military rifles, but they use the broad terms to weapons that aren't either
not saying pitbulls don't deserve hate (they do in the awful stories), but the perception makes it a bigger "problem" and makes people have a bad perception of a lot of great dogs/dog breeds

And he's likely misidentifying several breeds.

Most people suck at actually ID'ing pit pulls, so you probably are imagining it.

They all suck. Everyone knows hound dogs are the best dogs.

We need a pit bull board.

Went to the shelter a few months ago. Not many pit bulls. Ended up getting a 3 year old dachshund mix that has a deformed paw.

My hypothesis is that pitbull type features are genetically dominant and there are a lot of mutts.

And he's likely misidentifying several breeds.
So he can be identifying several breeds as a pit bull and be correct

It's not your imagination. Pit Bulls are definitely one of the top 3 preferred breeds today.
As somebody else said: being Trashy with a capital "T" is "cool" these days.

That still doesn't get you anywhere close to 50% like he theorized in the OP.
