Right? I had no idea what that day was about but after seeing that movie, I find the tradition very sweet and honoring. They celebrate the lives of those who have passed, they are remembered as important simply because they existed. It is the exact opposite of disrepect.
Not familiar with the cemetary layout, are they literally parking food trucks and partying on tops of graves? Or are people simply mad that a party is happening within the cemetary?
Guess I am surprised at the outrage considering the proximity to NO where funeral first/second lines are embraced.

It's a vestige of the death cult that people like Columbus, Balboa, and DeSoto put an end to hundreds of years ago. It needs to all stay in the garbage can of history.
While I don't think invading a cemetery is the way to go:
Halloween itself is a Celtic Pagan Holiday celebrated in Ireland and and Scotland and brought to the US by them called samhain - pronounced sow-en in which the dead are remembered. The idea is at this time of the year they believed the shade between life and death weakened and the dead could cross over. There is much more too it that I will not get into.
You do realize that in the Catholic Church the day after Halloween is All Saints and the day after that is All Souls Day - days dedicated to honoring the saints and souls who have died.
As the Spanish conquistadors would have also celebrated these days, Dia de la Muerta is just a blending of the old pagan belief of the indigenous populations with the catholic feast days, something that happened regularly because most cultures celebrate the same things at roughly the same time of the year.
It has nothing to do with the Aztecs slaughtering hundreds to the sun god.

I'm with you, Baw! Areas of Appalachia and the south celebrate Decoration Day. Might as well throw a coonass perspective and have a few beers while your sitting on MeeMaw's grave munching boudin. Celebrate the old gal.

Tbh I’ve never understood graves. I will be burned when the time comes. No need to come look at a slab of granite with my name on it.

Arguably one of the best Disney animation movies in the past 10 years. Between that and Moana, they were vastly better than frozen.

What’s even wilder is the people that get all worked up about people doing something they deem wrong around the graves lol

The indigenous holiday was originally in the Spring.
No one knows where the Días de los Muertos really comes from. Nowadays it’s believed that it was Aztec celebration that was nuanced by Spanish Catholics. However it really wasn’t a thing until a 20th century president pushed the holiday and celebrations in order to get Mexicans away from the Catholic Church.
The cult of Santa Muerte that really took off earlier this century has sort of mixed in with it and many people think it’s the same thing. In many ways it is.

If it is soooooooo great why doesn’t everyone go back there?
It’s soooooo great right?
All this unlawful migration does is create undeserved nostalgia.

In the small country cemetery located in Vernon Parish where my grandparents, aunt and uncle are buried they have "Grave Yard Working" day. This happens once a year and it's an event where repairs to tomb stones, general cleaning and up keep takes place. Families make a day out of it bringing food, working around the graves and reminiscing while the kids run and play in the grave yard. I haven't been in years but it wouldn't surprise me if they play music today. How is the Hispanic celebration much different?
That’s called Decoration Day across much of the rural South for the older generation.

If you don't believe food trucks and low riders IN A CEMETERY isn't disrespectful, you're just being obtuse. I will say that they have every right in the world to have the exact same festival elsewhere, just off cemetery grounds.
But then again, it's never been about compromise. It's about eff you, and we don't care who's pissed off.

My dad, his parents and my aunt and uncle and I find parts of this to be disrespectful. it's not a place to throw a party.

Yeah, it is horrible. Turning the final resting place of many into a street festival. Glad we agree.

I didn't know they have actual cemetery parties
I only recently learned from a friend that this is a thing with Hispanics. He built a house in the country near a cemetery and pretty much every Sunday they pull the BBQ pit out to the cemetery and have a celebration.

Cemetery on the Westbank plans Dia de los muertos “celebration” complete with food trucks, mariachi, and a low rider car show ? in the cemetery, westbank white folk proceed to lose their collective mind.
Outside of the lowriders, this sounds like a good time.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But they are dead. They aren’t somehow watching this and getting upset lol
