Departments full of "dr's" making 150k a year to teach non-essential degrees are out if control.
A seismic shift needs to happen but the state or fed govt will bail them out.

No, that’s not even remotely the problem. It’s not the faculty. It never has been. Most schools have gutted tenure track positions in favor of adjuncts.

Cut the bottom five degrees and programs yearly until the budget balances.
Not that hard.
For the majority of schools cutting out sports across the board would make a big dent in the budget imbalance. When you get down to it teaching classes on Cubism or Fengjian China is more in line with the proper mission of a university than cross-country and volleyball.

the concept of "saving" is antithetical to their purpose. They are absolutely programmed to spend more than they have and demand more than they need.
All parasitic organisms work that way.

Clearly you understand the "role they are supposed to play to our society" and aren't trying to make universities trade schools
I totally get what four year institutions are supposed to you pompous a-hole. However they aren’t even providing kids with the broad based general education that leads them to understand or critically discern issues. So frick off.
And yes, I also think that universities should provide transferable skills that they can use in the workforce. But even that has declined significantly.

Colleges need to move online. Cut 90% of costs, sell buildings, save taxpayers billions a year.

The totality of human knowledge is instantly available for free on a device everyone has in the palm of their hand.
How stupid must you be to go spend $200k on information given away for free?
