Were the Mongolians in the Middle Ages the biggest a-holes in history?

Just finished re-listening to Wrath of Khans podcast series from Dan Carlin. I say yes.

Japanese and their treatment of the Chinese in ww2. If we're speaking modern history.

The crusades.

And if we're speaking ancient man, the Persians.

Did they burn down their own settlements and then demand their leaders pay to rebuild?

Not much different than what the Khans did in China ca.1200.

The crusades

I mean sure if we just gloss over the fact that the Moslems attacked Christian Europe about 10x as much as the Christians attacked the Middle East.

And ancient man, the Persians.

The Mongolians made that look like child’s play.

Hey, just end this siege already and let us in, everything is cool.

Let the Mongols in.

Mongols proceed to slaughter everyone.

Repeat.

If leaders surrendered to the Khans (before fighting) they were surprisingly tolerant. You could keep you religion and culture and in most recorded instances they would leave you be as long as you paid tribute.

If you defied them they would murder EVERYONE.

Was using "The Crusades" as a time period, not a reflection of just what christians did during said time period.

It's referred to as "The Crusades" and honestly, it's the most brutal historical period imho.

I still think the persians are worse than the mongols, but that's just me.

And I agree with your assessment on the khans and japanese in comparison to one another.

The Mongolians came to power in roughly the same time period as the crusades. And the Mongolians killed roughly 50 million people. The crusades never came close to that.

Especially Oliver Cromwell - but he wasn’t as bad as the Mongolians or Persians.

If you have a Great Courses account. They have a pretty good course about it. The Barbarian Empires of the Steppes.
It's like 32 episodes, and worth the watch.

What’s amazing is that Mongolia was such a power but is irrelevant today. Hell you never even hear about that place

Fair. I still say it's equally bad. Especially culturally. And in terms of lost history.

A lot of the Persians weren't that bad. The Assyrians were pretty notoriously crappy. And the mayans definitely got what they deserved

Julius Caesar killed/sold into slavery hundreds of thousands of not into the millions during his conquests into Gaul. So he's a pretty big a-hole.

The Mongols industrialized genocide though and basically reshaped global powers in about 60 years. Iraq and China could very well be a global power now if not for it.
