They invaded and sacked the city of Ur in southern Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) in 2004 B.C. This brought about the end of the Sumerian civilization in Mesopotamia and threw the region into a small dark age before Babylon and Assyria rose from the ashes of Sumer and Akkad a couple of centuries later.

1,400 years after the collapse of the Sumerian world, the Neo-Assyrian empire was the major military power of the region. The Elamites were still around, and they made raids into the Assyrian Empire. They also funneled money and supplies to proxy groups who antagonized and threatened Assyria. This went on until the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal said enough is enough and went scorched earth on the Elamites. He burned their cities down so utterly and killed so many of their people that Elamite society came to an end except for some loose stragglers who escaped with their lives.

This whole situation sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Iranian powers still funnel money and support to proxies so that they can antagonize the world’s greatest military power (The USA) and its allies.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Lol

Here's just one part. It's all pretty funny and shows not much has changed in 4,000 years. They've also found divorce proceeding and fights over inheritance. Oh, and a murder case where the wife let 3 dudes kill her husband. She ended up getting off though.

It's a familiar story of a fundamentalist movement rising up to reject and attempt to destroy a more advanced civilization. It usually involves an internal civil war that expends to pull in the advanced powers. Furthermore, it's happened repeatedly in the islamic world and even here, with Tecumseh and the Creek war.
