Executive outcomes

I went down a rabbit hole on African private military companies and how throughout the 60s and 70s they were used in many bush wars. It seems some see them as defenders from communism and others as the defenders of colonialism. Does anyone here have more info on what these mercenary groups were really up to back then? I feel like this is a fascinating part of history that is forgotten about. Also makes me want to watch blood diamond again

Obviously good guys. I will provide no other context. Good day and you’re welcome.

if you are motivated by money to take part in a death squad , more or less, you are probably not the best person, regardless if you are fighting communism or defending colonialism. I dont know, its not my place to judge the way a man makes a living, but I dont think the organizations/states who were paying these guys ever had the average Congolese (just an example) persons best interest in mind. Good link there, I love Journeyman Pictures. so much good stuff.

These are also the same groups that funneled weapons to death squads like the Glenanne Gang in Northern Ireland I believe, so make of that what you will

I get that perspective but that the same time many of these guys were soldiers forged in world war 2 who had a set of skills that led them in that direction. If you have a service that is valuable and can make you lots of money why not provide said service?

that’s where I’m at too. They obviously did things that I could never see myself doing, but at the same time when you are fighting people who are cannibals, it’s hard to say you’re entirely in the wrong either.

1976: Death sentence for mercenaries
Three Britons and an American have been sentenced to death by firing squad for their mercenary roles during the Angolan civil war.

A further nine men were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 16 to 30 years at the People's Revolutionary Tribunal in Luanda.

Ernesto Teixeira da Silva, one of five judges presiding over the case, said: "Africa feels mercenaries are a danger to the people, the children and to the security of the state. They spread fear, shame and hatred in Angola."

Costas Georgiou and Andrew McKenzie, who both served in the British army, were given the death sentence for participating in the killing of two Angolan citizens and fellow mercenaries.

American Daniel Gearhart was sentenced to death for advertising himself as a mercenary in an American newspaper.

I don't feel sorry for them

Recruiter John Banks
John Derek Barker's role as a leader of mercenaries in Northern Angola led the judges to send him to face the firing squad.

The sentences have now been referred to the Angolan President Agostinho Neto. He must approve the sentences before any actions can be carried out.

British Prime Minister James Callaghan has reportedly asked the Angolan President to show clemency towards the men sentenced to death.

Lawyers acting on behalf of the defendants are appealing against the decision saying: "In our view there is no crime of mercenary nor was there disclosed such crime in Angolan law."

In Britain the man who recruited the British mercenaries, John Banks, said: "I don't feel sorry for them. They are soldiers, they knew what they were doing. I would do it again."

The 13 men were hired to fight in the civil war that broke out when Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975.

They were getting it done and keeping the peace too. Groups like Executive Outcomes were very good at stabilizing otherwise lawless shitholes.

Then the UN stepped in and called them names, and they were politically pushed out. This was great for the UN, Israel, et al because chaotic shitholes are good for the arms business.

Exactly, africa makes the ME inbreds look sane. PMCs were very much the "good guys" in that shite hole of a landmass.

I’ve also learned that what I previously thought about the mercenaries being racist white guys is totally wrong. Most of these units were interracial with many locals mixed in who just wanted a functioning society. Same with Rhodesia
