Y'all don't own anything together? Property, accounts, etc?

How long were y'all "married" for?

How would they know they "lost it when we brought it to them"? sounds sketchy.

Wait a minute. I live in Louisiana. We still have our original marriage license. Were we supposed to turn that in? There is no notary seal on it.

If you have joint bank accounts or own property with both your names on the deed, it still may bite you.

Duh.

Gay marriage is a new thing. Of course they don't have a record of it.

Most states don't have common law. Louisiana doesn't.

15 states and DC definitely recognize common law marriage:
Alabama
Colorado
District of Columbia
Georgia (if created prior to 1997)
Idaho (if created before 1996)
Iowa
Kansas
Montana
New Hampshire (for inheritance purposes only)
Ohio (if created prior to 10/1991)
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania (if created before 9/2003)
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Texas
Utah

Nothing joint except a line of credit she uses for school and I’ll make payments on until she’s out. I’m ok with that.

“Married” 2 years

Well we both took it up there and now they don’t have it and it’s not on record. The certificate is only good for 30 days after the license is issued so even if they found it now it wouldn’t be valid (this is confirmed).

in TN there is a part on the bottom of the license that tears off that you sign and have the pastor sign that validates the marriage in the states eyes once it’s filed. That’s what they didn’t have.
