was never recorded. No marriage on record means there is nothing to dissolve. Luckily we checked this before we hired a lawyer I guess. ?
On the good luck scale, that's off the charts!

Who told you that absence of a certificate equals never being married? I would check with a lawyer that practices in whatever state you got married. If Louisiana.... well, I have bad news for you....

Your call.... but, if you were married in Louisiana... you are getting bad advice. Art 87 of the Louisiana Civil Code outlines on 3 things necessary for a contract of marriage : 1) The absence of legal impediment, 2) A marriage ceremony, 3) The free consent of the parties to take each other as husband and wife, expressed at the ceremony.
Failure to file a license is not an automatic nullity.
I’m just sayin..... double check.... and maybe there is some authority that I am not aware of. Divorce can be potentially expensive but not being divorced when you think you are can create a whole different world of crazy problems. Best of luck.

Better chance of being struck by lightning while losing a limb to a great white than this happening.

Alabama no longer recognizes common law.
Alabama does recognize common law marriages that began prior to 2016. You need to show the following four things.
First, both you and the other person must have the legal right or "capacity to marry."
Second, each person must intend to be married to the other person.
Third, you both must hold yourselves out to family, friends and the community as being married.
Fourth, the marriage must have begun prior to 2017. In January 2017, common law marriages were no longer recognized as valid.

To be fair guys, this was a very amicable divorce. We weren’t going to sue for alimony or try to ruin each other’s lives. Basically this just saved us some lawyer and filing costs.
