Wonder if Wynton knows Lee was against slavery and secession.

I know he moved and lived in Queens until he died, but I don't recall ever seeing anything specific on this. I'd like to see what you're referencing. From what I was aware, he mostly always spoke fondly of New Orleans.

Either way, it's sort of apples to oranges, given the fact that we are talking about an era when there was true enforced segregation, versus a time when there was noting at all really like that and where black politicians have had control of the city for most of Marsalis' life.

Regarding the comment on Marsalis that "He's a great musician" -- he is regarded as a guy with great technical chops, having done both jazz and classical music, but a musician with no real soul or original personality. Factor in his incredibly pedantic and condescending know-it-all personality, and it's all too much. He is unwatchable and insufferable as an "expert" commentator in that Ken Burns "Jazz" documentary. Just read Miles Davis' autobiography for some hard left hooks on this Marsalis clown. Miles in 1989: "You need more than [technique] to play great jazz music, you need feelings and an understanding of life that you can only get from living, from experience. ... So all these white people are praising Wynton for his classical playing and that's all right. But then they turn around and rank him over Dizzy [Gillespie] and me in jazz, and he knows he can't hold a candle to all the shite we have done. ..."

True.
I've seen it discussed in various places, but it's been a long time. I know he had been gone a long time, and it was a big deal when he returned as Zulu in 1949, because it had been said that he did so somewhat reluctantly or that he only came BECAUSE it was as Zulu.

Like I said, it's been a long time since I've seen these various articles and discussions.

That's a good post. I've always thought there was a definite soullessness to Wynton's music. You can see that in the fact that he tells himself that he really has no widespread general appeal is because modern audiences don't "get" jazz and it's too "cerebral", but I think it's a cop out mechanism to overcome this fact. Gillespie and Miles Davis enjoyed a lot of crossover appeal because their music possessed an obvious amount of genuine soul. Marsalis' is completely lacking in it.

The Marasalis family has contributed more positive attiributes to New Orleans than the rest of the posters in this thread combined.

Eta: Branford Marsalis in particular

There's a notorious incident where Wynton tried to join Miles on stage at the Vancouver Jazz festival. Miles chased him off saying get the frick off stage, you can't handle this. The two had a straight up feud.

There was a rumor going around when the monument removal was first talked about 2 years ago that the owner of Hotel Modern on Lee Circle offered to front the money for removal. He happens to be from NYC as well.

I hate to rain on the parade here but Walter Isaacson is from New Orleans too.

Lol

What do you mean? The $27 that most of the posters spend when they come in town on Hand Gernades at Tropical Isle goes a long way for positive economic development toward the city.

Miles Davis on the Vancouver incident with Marsalis:

"So here I was playing and getting off on what I was doing. All of a sudden I feel this presence coming up on me, this body movement, and I see that the crowd is kind of wanting to cheer or gasp or something. Then Wynton whispers in my ear -- and I'm still trying to play -- 'They told me to come up here.' I was so mad at him for doing that shite like that, I just said, 'Man, get the f-ck off the stage.' He looked a little shocked when I said it to him like that. After I said that, I said, 'Man, what the f-ck are you doing up here on stage? Get the f-ck off the stage!" And then I stopped the band. Because we were playing some set pieces and when he came up like that I was trying to give the band some cues. He wouldn't have fit in. Wynton can't play the kind of shite we were playing. He's not into that kind of style. ... When Wynton did that to me, that showed me he didn't have no respect for his elders."

Jim Crow left him quite bitter toward his hometown.

But you're right. The comparison between Satchmo and Wynton, the eras they were in and the treatment they received is apples and oranges.

He was pretty negative about New Orleans. However, Louis had a much better case. The time he lived in was super racist

You means Walter Isaacson who is the President and CEO of the Aspen Institute?

The same Walter Isaacson who was the Chairman & CEO of CNN who was the architect of CNN's Pro-Democratic Party agenda?

can't be the same Walter Isaacson who was the Managing Editor for Time Magazine?

The same Walter Isaacson who is on the Board of Directors for United Airlines?

The same Walter Isaacson who is on the Board for the Bloomberg Philanthropies?

Walter Isaacson is one of the cheerleaders of the Mitch 2020 Campaign.
