Bullsh*t. They were taken down for the completely wrong reasons.

Every person on the tricentennial committee had donated to the removal and Mitch's DC war chest. This is old news.

Treme was mixed almost from the very beginning, French, Creoles, and in later years Silicians. In fact, they all co-existed for decades, there, most calling St. Augustine Church home, as well as St. Ann Church (which is now St. Peter Claver) and St. Elizabeth that is no longer in existence.

The esteemed Monsignor Henry Bezou, longtime priest of the Archdiocese, superintendent of Catholic Schools, historian and historical author grew up in Treme. (Bezou is French.) Another couple fellows I know, one named DeMaio, and one named Schiro (his uncle a longtime city functionary) grew up in Treme in the mid 20th century and earlier.

It was a true gumbo/melting pot for generations.
