Team Overreaction will claim victory when this simmers down and say told you so, wasn't a big deal.
The other side will claim victory by saying it was all the shut downs that caused it to simmer down.

If we get some hard numbers over the next 7 days if testing becomes widespread, we may actually have a "winner" in the debate.
It would be too early to thank containment if the numbers are widespread but the acute cases are super low.
On the other hand, if the cases are small but skew acute, the overreacting faction will have a great point.

We'll know we overreacted when we find out this virus has been around for months and already went through the US once.

Basically the only possible way that doesn't happen is if both "sides" get it "wrong" and this somehow balloons into a truly catastrophic event. I certainly don't think that will happen, btw.

Because if this Trump is in a no win situation. If this is successful and we stem the tide of the virus, the claim will be he overreacted and killed the economy. If it goes wild and it’s not contained, he didn’t do enough.

Disagreed
The “killed economy” will coming roaring back once this clears up. The economy itself is healthy, this is more of a disruption than an indicator of an unhealthy economy.
Trump should come out clean with either outcome (either the virus WAS overhyped and we played it overly cautious, or Trumps’s team’s planning worked to mitigate deaths and prevent it from getting worse).
Eta: of course the media will always = OMB regardless of outcome

It is better to shut things down and help curb the spread of the virus than it is to wait and see if it gets worse then declare an emergency. He is using the better safe than sorry strategy.
