oh they absolutely work. Have you not unwound one when finished and look at all the nasty crap it pulled from your ear? Great way to remove shampoo and wax out of your ear.
If you burn one without putting it in your ear, it looks exactly the same inside. It’s melted/burned wax & muslin or whatever material is in the candle, not debris from your ear.

Can put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in ear and lay on side. Then flip to other side and let drain.

is that not just the wax and soot from the candle?

Some folks in this thread just need some Debrox in their lives.

I've had problems with this since about my late 30s. An ENT told me to use a drop of olive oil in each ear about once per week and rinse in the shower. Seems to work well.

The smoke draws the toxins out of your ear.

My mom fell for that bullshite back in the early 00s. No, it’s a complete scam and does nothing and if anything may be damaging. Pure snake oil shite.

Just go to an ENT - its a super quick virtually painless procedure.
I got stuffed up pretty bad from using deep-insert IEMs de-gunked me in minutes. Specifically find an ENT though, they have the equipment to do it right.

Best way to get rid of ear wax
Hydrogen peroxide drops in ear. Cotton ball overnight
Next morning get a ear bulb syringe full of warm water and stick it in there with your ear tilted facing down. Squirt water at high pressure.

Has this done once. I think the gal who did it really believed it worked.
It sounds like it but that’s just the candle wax crackling, not your ear wax.

I question any tech advice you've ever given based on this response.

Friend had one removed from his ear. Apparently the sound volume difference was alarming.

hence its recommended to get ear wax out before you buy a hearing aid.

Just put some Debrox in each ear canal at night and make an appointment with you ENT to get a good cleaning out. My ear canals are very narrow, and I have to go to the ENT every 6 months to get my ears vacuumed out. One of the best feelings afterwards.

I've done this with minimal results. If done properly you are creating a vacuum that pulls some wax out. I have problems with my ears not properly cleaning themselves out so I get build up. Candling is not as effective as using warm water to flush
