Have any of you ever gotten and email like this?

I recall a local sheriff telling a story about this scam to a group of seniors.

He talked about how one day one of his deputies came in long faced and admitted to sheriff his boss that the deputy had gotten an email the about the deputy’s one handed guilty pleasures. And the email stated that the information was going to come out and he wanted to warn the sheriff and the deputy was prepared to quit or retire, I can’t exactly remember. So the department looked into it and realized right away it was a scam and the deputy was relieved.

You fell for the hot random girl sending you a link on social media to her live feed didn’t you?

Happened to me the girl put on a web show and supposedly recorded everything I said and did on my end. Then tried to blackmail me over it for money. I said go ahead and then blocked her. Nothing happened

The one thing that freaked me out on a few of those is they had old passwords for some things like my work outlook.

That’s how they get a lot of people. In reality, they got your password from some sort of data breach (there have been plenty of major ones over the years). They buy a register of names, email addresses, passwords, and whatever else is available.

Which leads me to another point - if you have an email account that’s been using the same password for multiple years and you’ve used that password for any other websites/services, chances are pretty good that somebody, somewhere has access to your email account.

I’m not one of those password complexity freaks, but everyone should really have a separate password for their email accounts with 2FA enabled, if available, to prevent identity theft.

Part of me thinks you’re really scared there is a video of you doing this stuff and have come here to allay your fears of it actually being released. I can tell you that no one want to see you do that.

The excellent grammar and solid sentence structure reveals that this is in fact a completely legitimate email.

THIS is why you think it is fake? Because blackmailers usually have good grammar?

I believe passwords should be Mnemonics and different for everything.

For bs sites like car forums and news sites. I use stupid simple passwords. Though for sites I use more I do 2fa and Mnemonics.

Like my old TD password.

I post here as Napoleon from New Orleans.

IphaNfr504

I don't use that one anymore, but it's a phrase tied to the site I'm on that only I knew that I shortened into a password.

You can use symbols and such too in place of words great for at or and.

I never did this until I was riding a subway in New York and they had this info ad about making all your passwords Mnemonics to make your passwords almost impossible to guess.

This is what my IT guys suggested. They also threw out the idea of using spaces when the password would allow it. And, as you suggested symbols for words, most common ones:

@ = A
* = o or 0
& = and
! - I or 1
$ = S

That's one indicator. Scammers often use intentional spelling mistakes, bad grammar, and make other obvious mistakes in their emails, the thought being it weeds out people who pick up on these things leaving the dumb and gullible to respond.

Of course the entire premise is batshit crazy but that is one thing to look out for.
