Depends on how fat someone is. Diet can knock quite a few pounds off if a person if he is severely overweight. But eventually it needs to be both. I have been borderline morbidly obese and dieting at first with very little exercise is easier to stick with. Now there is a little balance, but I'm still barely exercising. If I wanted to get to sub 200, I'd need to do some serious exercises.

Funyuns are munchies.

Munchies are good.

Since my surgeries this past November I've lost 70 lbs. I'd say it was from 10% complete lack of appetite and 90% lasix.

I've lost around 18 pounds over the past 3 months with virtually zero exercise. I might walk the dog a couple times/week for 20-30 minutes. I 'm 5'11" and was around 192-194 before the holidays. Now I'm around 175. I have type 2 diabetes and tried relying on just the meds - my diet was terrible. Wasn't controlling my numbers. I finally decided to cut carbs. I went from drinking 3-4 cokes/day to drinking Kool Aid or iced tea with 2packs of Truvia and 1 tsp. of sugar. Cut out the high carb side dishes. A typical day would be a bowl of cereal for breakfast, sandwich on wheat bread for lunch, and something like a ribeye with sautéed mushrooms for dinner. Or BBQ chicken. My daily carb intake is around 100-150g, so I'm not doing the fanatic paleo/ketosis thing. On weekends I cheat. The pounds just disappear. And my blood sugar numbers went back to normal instantly.
Now in the past when I tried low fat dieting, if I didn't exercise I didn't lose weight.

for most ppl its diet, my family (cousins uncles) are all relatively thin because our proportions are small and we have good genes. Most of my friends who dont work out arent fat either because of dieting. Stop eating all the time, and its okay to skip meals.

We always hear people throw numbers out there: 50% diet/50% exercise, 60/40, even 75/25.

Is there a actual number or are there too many variables?

Do drugs count towards diet? They're the most effective weight loss tool it seems.

I workout/exercise because 1. I think it tightens you up 2. I don't have to have as strict of a diet. If my diet is too strict it will fail easily.

THIS.

I started the keto diet early January, which I first heard about on here. I'm currently down 12 lbs. The first 5 lbs was water weight which I lost in the first few days.

My exercise has been pretty much nothing since Thanksgiving.

So for me it's 100% diet. I'm not even trying to count/restrict my calories. I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full.

I've been struggling to lose weight for years and never had anything like this be so effective. Also, not sure if it's the diet or the weight loss or both. My blood pressure has went from 140/90 to 120/70.

For weight loss, its mostly diet. Exercise is going to add muscle while burning fat so weight can stay the same or grow sometimes.

For just losing body fat % both are equally important.

This. It's pure calorie deficit. Last year I went from 190 to 165 (5'11") without changing my diet at all. I plateaued there, and could have worked on my body fat if I cared much about that, which would have required me to probably adjust my diet (just couldn't burn much more calories per day without being drained). But ultimately, I lost 25 pounds eating junk food.

Diet is paramount to losing weight. But your body still needs good fuel. Soups can have alot of sodium, but any bone stock soup diet will keep you full longer and be less calories. Learn how to make soups that don't come from a can, that shite is terrible.

Lean protein, veggies, & nuts. Cook your vegetables. Use Avocado Oil if you need a little oil. Portion control.

All that said, you need to get your heart rate up 3-4 times a week for 30-40 minutes. Walk at brisk pace, elliptical, bicycle, etc...you have to moderately exercise. All this, with a collagen, probiotic, and a little vitamin D from sun, you will improve your longevity and quality of life immensely

I think it depends on the person. My body responds much more to exercise than to diet.

Just knowing I'm watching what I'm eating makes my body go into starvation mode and shut down my metabolism.

I've lost 40 lbs in 3 months before from a very physical job and I was eating taco bell, McDonald's, and vending machine snacks like chocolate donuts and shite. (210 down to 170)

I hurt my knee a couple years ago and don't get to exercise anymore and I still eat like shite but never go above 210.

It makes me wonder how someone can be 300+. I don't think I could do that if I tried.

Zero on both, it's all genetic. Some people are born losing weight and some aren't.

I hope that's sarcasm, but regardless, many, if not most people, either believe that or live like that.

3500 calories = 1 pound

reduce intake by 3500 over x amount of time = 1 pound of weight lost

its far easier to not put that 800 calorie slice of pizza in your mouth vs a 3-4 hour HIT workout trying to burn that extra 800 calories.

exercise as a tool for weight loss is like using scissors to cut your lawn.

eta also exercising that much creates 2 problems:
1. higher likelihood for injury resulting in a setback of exercise entirely.
2. nobody can keep that level of exercise up with time constraints and eventual motivation wearing down meaning you should never get into the habit of eating that much in the first place.

95/5. If you are relying on exercise to maintain a certain weight, then something is wrong with your diet.
