You serious Clark? Ive been grilling on an egg for a long time and have never had anyone tell me it taste like charcoal. Are you not using Lump in your egg?
ETA: To the OP, these two are not exactly apples to apples. Both have their benefits. Sounds like you need a gas grill at this time.

I grill all the time on my Weber Genesis, so convenient.
Home Depot may have last years models on sale now. My sister and son each got a two burner Spirit for $199, regularly $399. I noticed one of the higher end Webers also half price.

Once I got my weber kettle and and the charcoal chimney to light the charcoal quickly, I haven't used my weber gas grill since (over 2 years).
I'm also in the market for the BGE, but that primo keeps calling my name. I can't pull the trigger

Weber Gas Grill vs. Green Egg
Check out the weber smokers as well, that is your competition for what the grenn egg can really do.

and once you get the BGE/Primo down pat you will never fire up the Weber again. My Weber sits in the corner untouched since I got my egg.

If you have an oven in your kitchen, you don't need a green egg.

I was wondering when you were going to show up.

Weber SMC is great for smoking. Got a 22" off Craigslist for a great price. Guy was upgrading to a pellet. I use gas for quick cooks and the SMC for low and slow smokes.

On Sunday I smoked two racks of ribs indirect, and had some unexpected neighborhood kids show up and threw 8 burgers on the direct side and made everyone happy.
I also have a Weber gas that I like for super quick steaks, chicken breasts, sausage warming...nice to have both.

I'm on year 12 of my Genesis Silver B
I am only on Year 9, but it still works well. It is hard to beat the speed and convenience of a gas grill.
Green Eggs are a good compromise for a grill/smoker, but not particularly excellent at either job. They are very good at roasting though.

I had a Weber Genesis and a Kamado Joe. I sold the Weber due to lack of use. I use a Looftlighter and I can have my grill at 700+ in about 10-15 min or ready for long smoke at 250. Last time I smoked two pork butt I went 18 hours at 250 without adding any fuel.

This is bull shite. You can grill a steak at 900 degrees over coal or put out competition quality bbq. Many people do use Kamados on the competition cirquits. I have judged quite a few events as well to know.
The quality of the food put on on Kamados made my Genesis worthless. It sat unused for 1.5 years before I decided to sell it. If you are dead set on a gas grill then Weber puts out decent grills. Not as nice as say Blaze Grills but light years better than the crap at home depot.
Stay far far away from the Weber Spirit. It's garbage made in China. No where near the quality of the Weber brand. Genesis and Summit are the only gas grills to buy from them. They do make very nice kettle style grills.

Traeger pellet cooker is by far the best grill I've ever had. I literally cannot cook on it every night. Smoking pork or turkey is amazing. Highly recommended.
