I'm in the market for a new grill. I keep hearing how great green eggs are. My only reservation is I have a family of five (3 young boys) and I want to grill quick. I don't have 30-40 minutes for a charcoal grill to get hot. Do green eggs heat up pretty quick, or should I just pick up a propane Weber and call it a day??

Well, burgers will have that funny charcoal/smoke taste on the egg. But, for smoking meats, you can't beat the egg. Some seriously good stuff. I have the Weber infrared gas version and it's awesome. If I had both, it would be the gas for hamburgers and quick stuff.

I just got this Weber Performer Deluxe and I like it better than Green Eggs for the reason you stated. Quicker to heat up, lighter so I can move it around, has gas starter, and its really built well. Has a charcoal bin and timer attached too.

Can recommend enough.

ETA:

It won't keep heat for smoking for long periods of time though like an Egg will. It is better for conventional meals.

I bought the pizza stone, iron skillet insert, and a few other Weber accessories. I can cook just about anything on it now.

I love kamado grills, but if your only goal is speed, go with gas.

Sounds like you need the convenience of a gas grill.

Weber is difficult to beat.

The heat up in about the same amount of time as any other charcoal grill, they just hold heat longer and use less charcoal to do it.

I have both a gas grill and a smoker. The gas grill will be quicker, but the smoker will taste better.

Except you're not supposed to use lighter fluid or artificial accelerators.

I get my Weber rolling like a bonfire in 15 seconds

I don't really consider them competition if you ask me. I think the weber gas grill is best for quick grilling sessions if you don't smoke very much and you don't care whether you have charcoal taste I'd go weber.

If you use the snake method you can easily get 4-6 hours between 200-250. If I'm doing a larger cut that needs to go longer I check it around 4 hours and add another snake if necessary.

For sure, but the Egg can go for 12 hours. I seent it!

I love my Weber kettle. The Performer Deluxe package has absolutely everything I need. The gas starter, charcoal bin, etc. Its incredibly practical and cooks really well.

It's not as fast or easy as gas, but i can have my egg ready for burgers in under 15 minutes. If I could only have one grill and I only do now, I'd take the egg. But I do wish I had a nice gas grill occasionally.

For just burgers quickly, I love to do them in the cast iron in the kitchen a couple times a year. Quick, easy, and great that way too.

Majority of gas grills require about 10 minutes to preheat. Majority of ceramic grills take about 10 minutes to preheat. Ceramic grills are extremely versatile. High heat searing, low and slow smoking, grilling, and baking. One of my favorite things is pizza off my ceramic grill. Best all around grill you could buy is a ceramic grill. Don't get stuck on BGE. Look at Primo and Kamado Joe. Kamado Joe has made a ton of improvements to their grill and in my opinion is the better deal. All 3 brands are similar in proformance and make great products.

I completely disagree. I've had an egg for 6 years now. I think it's great for grilling, but only okay for smoking. I would much rather a dedicated, offset smoker.

As far how long the egg takes to heat up, it completely depends on how clean it is and how hard the wind is blowing. Whenever I need to get it going quick, I crank up my leaf blower and force air through the bottom damper for a few minutes.

Yeah my brother in law has one. It turns out great bbq. I just don't have the patience. I rarely go past anything that needs 3-5 hours in the smoke.

I wish I had seen this before I got my 26 inch. To make a long story short, I had one of those massive gas/coal/smoke Char Griller duos but the gas side rusted out. I rarely used the gas except for a quick meal maybe once a month. Mother in law was going to get me a new grill for my birthday and I always loved the weber I had in college. Just needed a bigger one. I didn't even shop around, I just told my wife to let her know to get me a big Weber. I would love the table set up and coal bin but it is what it is. Next one.

Kamado Joe Blow. Problem solved. I love mine.

Kamado just released new features for their grills. New Daisy wheel, hinges, and gaskets.
