Wearing headphones everywhere

So many people these days are wearing headphones and staring at their phones and have no clue what is going on around them. You could end up like this guy.
So this doofus not only ran the wrong race but he hadn't studied the course beforehand.
quote:
Wearing headphones, Kohler wasn't listening closely to the starting announcements.
"So when they said 'go,' I went," he said, reminiscing about the day.
Just outside the dome, at the intersection of 19th Avenue North and University Drive, Kohler turned north, following the marathon pack. Half-marathoners were supposed to go south.
Kohler started getting suspicious after seeing course markings that said "full marathon only."
He wondered whether the two courses would converge and half-marathon markings would appear.
So this doofus not only ran the wrong race but he hadn't studied the course beforehand.

Sometimes I wear them when I don't feel like talking to people but most of the time I'm not listening to anything.

Despite going the distance, Kohler received a half-marathon medal because that's what his bib number indicated.
That sucks.

I avoid all people wearing headphones or Bluetooth.

Seems like his dumbest decision was to run a long distance place if you ask me

I do not have the luxury of Bluetooth in my car. My job also requires me to answer 50+ calls a day. The last thing I want is my phone attached to my head but have no choice. No I am not a telemarketer or customer service rep. My phone bill minutes equate to about 3.5 hours a day on my cell phone. That is not including my office line. I hate my phone.

No different than 12-15 years ago except they were Ipods.
Had not reached the mainstream in the South yet, and we went on a trip to NYC and almost everyone was walking around with earbuds.

Or they could end up like this kid in Slidell

SLIDELL, La. — Slidell police identified the victim who was killed by a train as a teen who was walking to school on Wednesday morning. The victim, 16-year-old James Pulsifer, was walking to school about 7 a.m. when he was struck by a southbound Norfolk Southern freight train. The conductor called police after the incident occurred between North Boulevard and Lafayette Street.
The conductor told investigators that the victim was walking along the center of the railroad tracks with headphones over his ears. He died at the scene. “The conductor tried to stop the train, and did everything possible to notify the teen, but it was apparent he did not hear the train’s horn,” police said.

I don't know how people where headphones out in public. Depending on the headphones you use, you can't hear much of anything going on around you.. I like to be able to hear what is going on around me.

That's the beauty of it. I don't wear them when I'm walking around but if I'm on a plane or a train or sitting around somewhere I don't always want to hear what's around me.

Yeah that's different. I am talking about people who are grocery shopping, etc.

I mean isn’t the one place to use headphones when running?

He ran the first half in about 2:30. Not real bad. Probably would finish in about the mid to lower half of his age bracket.
Then he proceeded to take another 3:30 to finish.
The 5:54 probably allowed him to finish in last or very close to last in his age bracket.
Hey, but he finished it. All in all,not all that terrible. Running full marathons is markedly more difficult than running a half. Overall kudos to him.

You can replace your head unit for <$150 and get a Bluetooth microphone.
