I thought it said the lighter skinned people simply interbred with those already there, which just swaps some qualities back and forth? Not completely overrun and displace? Also, the article mentioned the people who independently developed light skin in Northern Europe...so Europe already had light skinned people in parts anyway.
Even so, skin color is but one quality of a person. Judging from the reconstruction, the prototypical person at the time was anything but exclusively modern "Europoean," "Indian," "African," or anything else we know today. So the whole who was here first thing is kind of meh. Though it does seem the African qualities of the people there were least prominent, especially after the skin lightening.

The hang-ups people have about race are so weird to me.
My dad is dark, darker than a lot of black people. My mom is white. My sister came out an olive tint (no pics), my older brother came out white, my younger brother came out dark like my dad, and I came out daywalker white.
You can have two parents from different regions of the world and your looks are basically a crap shoot. But just because you come out light or dark doesn't make you any less diverse/different.

it's just in/out group shite
you don't need race, either. in mono-race areas, you find the same sorts of vitriol. sub-Saharan Africa, the Balkans, Sunni/Shia split among ME Arabs, and Nazi Germany are great examples of this

Yeah, there are so many facets. My parents grew up poor but made it to the nice neighborhood, so on top of being "new money", we were called "mutts", "dirty half-breeds", etc.
