I have quite often seen the comment " We used to settle thing s with fistfights instead of guns " comment, usually after a tragic incident such as the shooting death of WAyde Sims. I realize someone is trying to draw a distinction between what they believe is acceptable and not acceptable. Why are there so many times now where only those two options must prevail?

I attended LSU in the seventies and there simply were very few fights, if any such as we have seen over the last 15 to 20 years. Remember the brawl on the parade grounds at a tail gate party a few years ago? There are repeated fights at local college bars and events every weekend. Fortunately, not all end as tragically as Wayde's shooting death. There just seems to be another element now that transcends race, age and sometimes even gender. Sure alcohol plays a part, but there was much partying then and the drinking age was 18 at the time. There simply was not a culture of fighting and shootings were virtually non existent near college communities in that era.

No, I am not looking back at my college days through selective lens. There was conflict, but seldom more than verbal. Whats different over the past quarer century? If you are under 50 you were part of that cultural evolution. What caused it? How can it be reversed to a more civil time

Not nearly so many people went to college back then.

It all goes back to cotton. Lots of other factors are to blame, like FDR’s New Deal, but the root cause was cotton and those lasy arse honkies refusal to pick it themselves.

folks used to shoot it out more and it was expected that if you got called out and you had beef you went in the streets and had a duel. Its been happening since someone discovered gun powder goes pow.

I agree that now everyone has a video camera ready to go so it captures more of these events. Why do you think all these teachers are getting busted? You think this didnt happen in the 70’s? Bs

Yes, you are. The whole things used to be so much better/less violent/whatever back in the day is a "fallacy." I graduated from LSU in 2011. I saw I think 1 fight when I was living in dorms. This whole thing was very rare even then. It's just that in the 70's everyone wasn't walking around with a video camera in their pocket, and your selective memory neglects to take that into consideration.

Also funny how people of my generation are simultaneously both bigger pussies and more violent to people like you. Do you ever stop to think about the fact that you try to assign all the worst traits to an entire generation?

I think the point is over a perceived cowardice in today’s society compared to years back, but I agree. There are a whole lot more altercations these days compared to years past. It’s truly become a really violent society... very angry and frustrated.

How about take personal responsibility for your own actions and behavior.

If nothing good happens after midnight on the streets, don't get in a fight with some punk who wants to fight, ESPECIALLY in N.B.R. They all have guns now and none of 'em give a flying s$!t about anyone else life.

People can not handle being "wrong" or shown up. I think people are way more insecure nowadays. Which leads to more foghts.

Culture

I’m 40 and during our jr and high school years all disputes were handled by fighting. By college time most of that group didn’t continue with their education and most by that point in their life were mature enough not to deal with it.

Did I say culture

pretty accurate breakdown, if you haven't got fighting out of your system by about the eighth grade you're a mental midget

I think “people that are around southerns campus” couldn’t afford guns back in the day so they had to use fists

In this state, It ain’t generational, it’s ethnic. Ain’t but one group exhibiting such disregard for life and such a propensity to result to lethal force as AfAms. Ban me, call me racist, whatever. But based on their population size, show me another ethnicity with the same problem. You can’t. Doesn’t mean all blacks are bad. Doesn’t mean other ethnicities aren’t violent and riddled with their own thugs. But I see no other group- majority or minority that kills each other at the rate AfAms do.

Then a lot changed by 1980 There was at least one fight in the student section at every single football game. Heck, it seemed like Greg Cook, alone, was in one at every football game. I can't imagine that just started in his senior year in 1980.

The homicide rate in this country is nowhere near what it was in the 70s. I mean not even close. And I'm 56, so not trying to make excuses for my generation.
