re: We need to launch another Saturn V to the Moon ASAP

Seriously, why can’t we rebuild the Saturn V with better hardware and go back to the Moon?
Because the government, after achieving the pinnacle of human exploration, destroyed the plans for the Saturn V.
Not really, but a LOT of that program wasn't the sort of thing that is possible to capture on paper. The Saturn V wasn't just the blueprints to build one, but the knowledge of the people who literally made that shite up and built it and all of the ancillary systems to support it from the ground up. Without them and their institutional knowledge, you might be able to build a Saturn, but you sure as hell can't fly one.
Plus, there are better ways to build rockets these days. You don't want to build a Saturn V. You want to build a modern rocket.

Mine the moon for what? What resources does it have?
Helium 3 for starters.

How does a moon base save costs? Would it not have to be constantly resupplied? The size of the compound needed to make that happen would be massive.
Because it’s far cheaper to launch a shuttle from there and the Moon has materials to make fuel from (the aforementioned Helium 3). If you can get someone to the Moon, produce the fuel at the Moon, and launch from there, that removes a ton of logistical issues of launching towards Mars, landing, and then launching from Mars. Between the gravity and the atmosphere of Earth, that’s a great majority of the fuel you’re taking to get there. You launch from the Moon and you can create fuel from there, it makes the journey far easier.

The Saturn V was an ongoing project throughout the entire program. The truth is they do not have plans for many of the parts used in the rocket. It would be impossible to build the thing now without starting completely over.

Because establishing a Moon base would not only allow us to mine it, but it could be a launch base to Mars and cut the costs quite frankly. People don’t seem to understand the value of a Moon base
But unfortunately politicians decide the budget for NASA and its next to impossible to get any of them behind it when all they care about is getting elected and getting them to propose billion and billions of dollars for something that is years off is something they arent gonna do
But yes, we absolutely should look to establishing a moon base in the near future

We are working on it actively my man.

spacex will get us to the moon in 2022 the easiest and most efficient with the methane/lox vertically landing starship, could make multiple moon trips a month

Full disclosure: Grandfather who worked with Von Braun passed in 2019 and dad currently works for NASA.
Did he see his personal Nazi medal collection by any chance?

Von Braun passed many years before I was born... If my GPA was still alive I'd be sure to ask. I did ask on his deathbed if we really went to the moon and he said yes so take that for what it is worth.
ETA: I asked about a week before he actually passed... That wasn't exactly top of mind at the end of his life.

I think you probably know more than me on this, but it’s bewildered me why we couldn’t just rebuild the Saturn V and put better hardware in it. There’s something I’m missing here clearly that smarter and/or more informed people could explain to me. I just don’t process why we couldn’t remake a rocket that got us there in the past with easily found hardware in our time.

Dude, every god damn President since Nixon has had a 4 year plan to get back to the Moon and 10 years to get to Mars.
Obama certainly didn't

No he promised it too saying we’d be back in 10 years. It’s a running gag among Presidents.

So much of Apollo was rushed and shot from the hip (or at least by NASA standards).
Apollo 13 was caused by a one of these as ad hoc changes, by upping spec voltages for faster ground testing mid program without confirming all components can handle the higher voltage.

If the moon were made of cheese would you eat it?
I would if it were made of bbq spare ribs. And I’d polish it off with a tall, cool Budweiser.

If any president came out with a plan for a moon base, id seriously consider voting for them just off that. I truly think that is one of the single most important achievable future projects we should embark on

Do y’all not follow Artimis, SLS, starship and blue moon? Why would we want to bring back an outdated rocket when we are currently building the new rockets to get us there by 2024.

If there is legit benefits to going to the moon / mars other than “because we can”, I’m all for it.
If not, take the money and build a damn loop

There are immense benefits to establishing a moon base

All of that would literally do nothing to better our nation. The moon is a dead rock and Mars isn't much more.
You should look up how much technology has been invented thanks to NASA having to figure out how to get humans into space and to the moon.
