Hell, he got his arse handed to him the first day at Shiloh when there was a level playing field numbers wise. It took reinforcements on day two to avoid a catastrophe
Sherman: “Well, Grant, we've had the devil's own day, haven't we?”
Grant: “Yes. Lick em tomorrow though.”

not once was he forced to do anything noteworthy
After re-entering the army, being promoted to the rank of brigadier general, and given command of the Military District of Southeast Missouri, Grant would fight and lose his first battle at Belmont in Mississippi County, Missouri. His opponent was Leonidas Polk who most historians recognize as the worst general in the Confederate Army.

Absolutely not. Learn history. Read Chernow’s biography.

His reputation has actually improved dramatically amongst presidential historians. In the late-20th century, most had him ranked near the bottom. Most now rank him in the middle tier.
Biden made them all look better.

True. He knew Don Carlos was on the way.

I mean sure he was probably an effective general but he was a terrible President. How are you not aware of this?
Posted on 7/23/25 at 10:20 pm to RollTide1987
Oh so the people who lived closest to his actual lifespan were worse judges of his character than historians several decades later? Are these the same Presidential historians who rank Biden ahead of several other Presidents? Lol

We have a parish named after him not that the citizens had much say in the matter.
And the Parish seat is named after his VP.

The Butcher Grant
He had an endless supply of poor Irish immigrants they would take right off the boats to help subjugate the South, the Tyrant Lincoln’s bloodlust knew no bounds.

His final resting place in New York City, known appropriately as Grant's Tomb, is the final resting place for both him and his wife and is visited by an estimated 100,000 tourists every year.
As of a few years back, the city had neglected his tomb to the point that it was a graffiti and urine magnet.

Random side story. After SC seceded and before Sherman went north from Louisiana he wrote a bunch of letters.
In them, he argued correctly that the south could never win if the fight was in the east, based on population, manufacturing, etc. the north could just throw people and resources at the war until the south was worn down. He thought the only way the south could win would be to go all in on keeping control of the lower Mississippi River. Keep control of that and you could force an agreed separation.
He was convinced southern leadership would figure that out and all of the real fighting would be for control of the lower river. They didn’t and the south lost.
