Pretty shitty "choice" he gives you, huh?

It's why Christians focus so much on humans being innately evil, broken creatures who deserve eternal torture and punishment from the moment of birth irrespective of their actions, saved from this fate only by the amazing grace and love of their deity. Without this as a starting point, it's fairly obvious to any rational person that a deity that would excruciatingly torture someone for all eternity simply for not believing in them can only be described as evil.

Religions that treat eternal bliss as a goal to be earned (Valhalla, Nirvana, etc) which then mete out eternal punishment if truly earned (or not at all), sidestep this issue. Even Judaism and Islam have some middle grounds and/or eventual release. Christianity is unusual, if not unique, in the dichotomy it creates between eternal bliss and eternal suffering and how one is subjected to either.

Or, the origin of our being isn’t sentient and there’s no meaning but what we make it.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy that you’re the universe experiencing itself. Find beauty in the fact that intelligence evolved in social animals, so we get to experience friendship, camaraderie, and love.

What a glorious accident.

Anna Frebel is an astronomer and astrophysicist at MIT. This is good if you have time and like complex analysis of how we got here. She makes it "relatively" easy to comprehend what's going on here.

Yes. He created you to have a relationship with him. Yet he gives you the choice because it would me meaningless if you were forced. Your suffering will just be eternal spiritual separation from him. It is only a crappy choice for those who reject his purpose for creating you in the first place.

Weird, Christians seem to spend a lot of time talking about the eternal physical torture aspect. There was a thread a few days ago with a poster gleefully describing some deceased political opponent in hell being “arse raped by demons.”

So is it the mainline Christian position that I’ll just be super sad in the afterlife because I’ll be separated from the Christian deity, and not that I’ll be tortured by demons and/or consumed by excruciating fire for literal eternity?

Yes.

You will meet Him. You will understand and feel and be with all that is love and truth and justice and good. You feel that amazing presence. You will know the Truth that you always have known but chose to deny for your own selfishness. And then you will be torn from that amazing perfect presence for eternity because of your own decisions never to feel it again. That is hell. The complete separation from God for eternity and forced to live with the consequences of your own actions.

Because as an evolved species, we're meant to eat, shite, breed and sleep. The ultimate purpose of being a human is to reproduce as much as possible, our bodies naturally want us to and will drive us into that direction. The more offspring we have, the better chance our bloodline has with survival. That's why we as men will do anything to get laid with women. Sex is what we are primed to prioritize over any other function. Sex has many health benefits, including lower stress levels and better cardiovascular health. It's one reason why I believe prostitution should be legalized and regulated

It is unfortunate how carelessly believers are in relating the teachings of eternal separation from God. A biblical understanding is that the Lake of Fire (e.g. Hell) was created for Satan and those fallen angles who followed him in rebellion against God.

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels…” Matthew 25:41

It is the desire of God that all repent of their sin and are forgiven and reconciled to Him.

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
