..a few subtle differences between then and now. 1st, folks smoking on the sideline. 2nd, a commentator mentions one of the ND players that got knocked out and took a little longer to come too. 3rd, obviously no headsets, but it's weird how noticeable it was. Bear Bryant, Ara Parseghian, and Howard Cosell, DiNardo, Croom. Great game

1979 Sugar Bowls coming on next.

I’m curious what the percentages of races in the stands were?

I can go back only 20 years and find out who different a catch was defined. It seemed like once you got both hands on the ball, it was possessed. You didn’t have to make football moves and all that bullshite. If you made a catch and got leveled, a loose ball was a fumble.

Did you notice they played real football? Hard hits and the QB was considered a football player too? You could actually hit a QB.

Did you notice the coaches dressed like gentleman in a coat and tie? Johnny Majors and Gene Stallings were perhaps the last two to dress this way.

this went on until early 90s...

a looong time ago, boxing was the number one sport boxing didn't change... .football is... football is not as stupid as boxing was.

also - players now much bigger, much much faster - collisions much more violent

I always notice how much quicker the ball was snapped once they got up to the line of scrimmage. There weren't a lot of pre-snap reads or play changes.

I don't know about the stands, but the difference in racial makeup of the teams change drastically from the '73 Sugar Bowl and the '79 Sugar Bowl. The '73 Bama team had just a hand full of black guys, the '79 team is closer to 50/50.

Did you notice that Alabama had one player who would run to the huddle, give them the play and then run back to the sideline. The sidelines were a circus. Fans were everywhere and kept getting in the way.

OT a bit, but there is a classic pic somewhere of Barry Switzer smoking during a home game in the 70s.

The field at OU used to have a huge crown/slope too. Almost comical how steep it was but that was the drainage solution back then.

For me, Tom Landry will always be the pinnacle of this.
