True. I watched a documentary called "The Dark Side of Chimps" and I had to stop watching it due to some really graphic shite.

True, chimps, lions, bears and other mammals will routinely kill the young offspring of a potential mate to ensure that any resources will go to their own offspring rather than that of another male.

Additionally, I think many species become able to gestate again once their young offspring are dead.

I watch nature shows all the time and it’s not always nice

I do too. This was fairly tame like the earlier poster said, knowing the cub would have died a slow death of starvation. And the male bear killed it instantly.

But I was watching a show the other day. There was a wildebeast being chased by like 10 hyenas. That poor beast ran full sprint, what seemed like for hours, trying to make it back to the herd for protection. It's lungs must have been about to explode. And just before he got to it, the hyenas got him.

Watching one clutch his throat, and the rest jump on his back, made me sick. He tried to stay up, but couldn't. When they finally got him down, they just started eating him alive. It was brutal, I turned the channel, frick that.

I get it, circle of life. But frick those trashy arse hyenas. And the herd of Wildebeast who watched. They say if he made it to the herd, it would be protected. Well, frick that herd for not going to him.

End rant.

I wont post it but what I watched during that docu wasn't about killing offspring. What Chimps do to each other for territory is downright gruesome. They have never re-aired that doc and for good reason.

Yep, thats what Hyenas do. I dislike them as well. But love to see it when they harass lionesses and then watch the big boys show up and give those nasty little bastards what they deserve.

What surprised me most was how for a while the male was more focused on killing the cub than getting the pissed off sow bear off his back. He was bent on killing that cub.

I think griz are the same way, where the biggest threat to bear cubs are roaming males.

Yeah, my kids and I watch nature docs all the time and there was one...might have been planet earth, where these birds...some kind of condors I want to say, they just push their whole brood off a cliff.

And these little birds are just bouncing down the cliffside, off of rocks and shite. And my little girl turns to me and says “daddy, nature is rude!” in this little huff with her arms crossed.

Apparently they have to do it because there is no more food on the cliff, and about 1 in 5 don’t make it but they are built all soft and resilient when they are young so they just bounce around on the way down if they can’t figure out the wing thing.

It was wild

How about when they decide to take on a Honey Badger? That makes for interesting watching.

Pretty sure he had crushed its neck when he ripped the poor little guy off the tree. So it was dead.

But mama bear was barely fazing him for a while.

I saw one the other night about Albatrosses. Let's just say... they are a candidate for stupidest animal in nature.

If their chick isn't sitting ON their nest when they get back from getting food, they don't know it's their chick. It could be laying right next to the nest... half on it in fact, and the parent won't feed it. If it makes it onto the nest... all is good. Just stupid, stupid animals.

Those are just black bears. Lightweights. Search for Alaskan Brown Bears, Kodiaks, or Polar Bears if you want to see some heavyweight matchups between bears.

I'll take a motivated black bear show over a brown bear. Black shows are vicious defending their young.

I've been photographing this badass we call Nikki for years. Shes 21, and the males (both black and brown) leave her alone. She doesnt care about humans though, I've been 10 feet away with no problems

Bear 25 (Nikki) and cubs
