Washington resident here and I'm about 5 years from retiring. Most of my friends see the writing on the wall and are already making their exit plans from this state.
We're turning into California.
This tax will be challenged in court, based primarily on the following:
In 1933, the Washington State Supreme Court ruled against a proposed graduated income tax in the case of Culliton v. Chase, stating that such a tax would violate the state constitution's requirement for uniformity. This ruling has led to the prevailing interpretation that any income tax imposed in Washington must be at a flat rate, not exceeding 1%.
However, the Washington State Supreme Court is packed with liberals, and they'll find a way to make this stick, and the coming income tax will stick as well, it's just a matter of time.

I wonder if that pic was live action when it passed
I don’t understand why anyone would show that much joy on imposing tax on someone else who is actually successful.
Crazy times.

They always say the same thing when power shifts, “the rich will flee.” They said it when Mamdani won in New York. They say it now about Seattle. But just watch. The prophecy never comes to pass.
Wealth does not abandon beauty so easily. Seattle sits between the sea and the mountains, crowned by the Cascades and wrapped in forests and water. The wealthy did not gather there by accident.
People who can choose anywhere rarely abandon places of rare beauty for places that only pretend to have it.
Uhhh, there are non-partisan statistics that show wealthy people and businesses are fleeing California and New York for Texas, Florida, and Tennessee. shite, even left wing newspapers have reported this stuff recently.
So you're just...wrong.
Also, anecdotally, I live in Tennessee and the number of New York and California license plates I see is insane, feels like always on a G-wagon or Range Rover or Tesla. I'm not there anymore, but go drive around Nashville.
Oracle, Amazon, In-n-Out Burger, Alliance Bernstein, etc. have moved or are moving major operations (or all operations) there. Side effect is that these people sell their outrageously priced real estate in CA and NY and buy mansions in Nashville for half the price and the whole market is fricked. And even worse, they bring their voting habits with them and try to destroy Tennessee.
The poor people aren't moving here, it's the wealthy.
It's not just Nashville either, East TN is filled with them. Maybe a third of my kids' private school applicants, according to the admissions director, are from CA, NY, IL, or another similar state.

That’s ironic considering those who are wealthy have more money than they’ll ever spend or need.
So what?

The greedy will leave the gates of the city, not because the city failed them, but because it asked something of them. They will guard their treasure while the roads crumble and the needy cry out, forgetting that the foundations they abandon once carried them too.
Oh, you’re just fricking with everyone. Carry on

The Seahawks, Kraken, and Mariners won’t be happy about this.
Yep. Already had one MLB pitcher a few weeks ago that turned down an offer from the Padres and signed with Arizona and he said publicly that CA's high state income tax played a big role in his decision.
Hopefully more players start publicly admitting that when they turn down offers from Seattle or California teams to sign with teams in Texas or Florida.

That’s 47.5% federal/state for top rate for earners. Assuming it tacks onto federal. Maybe 50% of they have property and sales taxes.
There is a point of truly diminishing returns with that kind of burden.

What doesn’t make sense is that HH 1m but individual also 1M? How is that fair?
Posted on 3/12/26 at 10:46 am to jclem11
I think this is a fair take. My wife can find a job anywhere and I can work remote. One challenge is that good schools and diverse area is tough to find outside of high cost of living areas

This is how it starts...I think 2,000 people in Nashville and like 4,500 in Seattle. They'll never completely leave Seattle, but I bet it slowly shifts more to Nashville, especially for high earners/management/c-suite.
The Starbucks CEOs charity foundation just moved to Florida too.
