The best old school hole-in-the-wall bar is still flying under the radar and going strong. Perhaps now the oldest continuous operating bar in Baton Rouge. No food...no frills...just booze.
During my college years a barrel-chested, handle-bar moustached bartender would serve your drinks and just collect for them out of the stack of cash you had on the bar in front of you.

The old Happy Note was a bar with college kids, but it was not a college bar.
The regulars were all degenerate alcoholics. we would go in there in the afternoon/evenings sometimes just to pre-game and the after work crowd was often better than the late night crowd

Murphy's needs to be included in this list. My freshman year is a blur because of Murphy's....
ETA: The year was 1994. I honestly didn't go there much after that. Spent more time at Caterie, Fred's, etc.
agreed....I cant even count how many times we got kicked out of Murphys...we just stopped going

I lived at The Happy Note for several years. My then girlfriend, now wife, and I were regulars. Shirley the owner, Jack the bartender, Eddie the bartender on weekends. Eddie cooked on Saturdays, usually something like chicken and dumplings or red beans. We became good friends with Eddie and his family for many years. Tommy the manager/bookie. I almost always had to drop off an envelope for Tommy and rarely picked one up.
Lock was a regular and sat at the right corner of the bar. It became a race between he and I to get there first and grab that seat. Lock was a great guy but turned mean when he drank scotch. Haven’t heard from him in years.
It was a waste of many days and years but the memories are awesome.

Kingfish was a club bro. Whole different category. But I know where you are coming from.

Two drinks from Jack, the bartender, and you couldn’t walk straight. One drink was plenty.

Around the World at The Chimes was not only a huge feat, it was a real eye opener to what other countries called beer.
5 times for me.
I went to Happy Note 2.0 a good bit, but don't remember the original spot.
Loved Slinky's as well when Chimes was busy.

If you didn't vote yes, then you didn't go there enough. Thanks, Shirley. Frank and Sandy

Place was a fricking shite show of mixed drink pitchers, mdma, ghb, and juice monkeys. Lots of fun though
You say that like it's a bad thing... I lost a lot of good memories in that place.

worked in the mall (Cortana) and my manager was the head bartender at Doc's. So for about 3=4 years, we always started the night there, even if it was dead, because we drank for free.
I don’t think I really know you, but I know we had to have drank together. Docs was our favorite place to go. Was sad when I heard it closed down.

Before or after? I thought Doug bought it and it changed from Docs to Dougout?
