Actium?

Spain actually reached its height of power after the Armada was destroyed, so I think being a country with Anglo roots, we tend to overemphasize.

pretty incredible Midway was only 7 months after Pearl. Was reading about the crypto guy recently and he basically had his career ruined from political infighting

The atomic bombs were another big F U to the Japs. I wonder what would have changed if the bombs were available when we were taking all those islands.
30,000 japs dug into a little island? Drop a little boy and end that shite real quick

The whole Pacific Fleet was just destroyed at Pearl Harbor

Fortunately for us, our carriers were out to sea that day.

then a few months later we kick their arse and stop their expansion
.

Not hardly, we lost well over 110,000 troops and another 250,000 wounded just in the Pacific/Asian theater.

LINK

Most of the war effort was focused on the European theater.

MacArthur and Nimitz decided on a 'island hopping' strategy to defeat the Japs that took years.

Think of Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Midway(that you mention in the OP), Soloman Island, the Philippines...it was a long, bloody costly war.

The Japanese soldier nor the top brass did NOT surrender.

At Iwo Jima, there were 21,000 Japanese troops defending that piece of volcanic ash, a little over 200 Japanese soldiers were captured or surrendered.
They were very fanatical and would fight to the death.

The premise of the OP is correct, Midway in the Pacific theater was huge for us.

Nimitz, Fletcher, and Halsey and 3 of our aircraft carriers bitch slapped the Japanese Imperial Navy big time. They didn't know what hit them
Uh, no. Halsey took one look at the odds and checked himself into Pearl Harbor sickbay with - wait for it - dermatitis. That's a disease caused by cowardice and is evidenced by a yellow streak where the spine is normally found.

Can't believe the big bad 'Bull' would do that? Go look it up. Remove the arse-kissing press corps that Halsey's staff fed and you are left with one incompetent coward.

Exactly, something about those pesky litlle Carriers, and all but 2 Battle ships saw action later in the war. Japs achieved surprise at Pearl, that was really about all they accomplished in the long run.

IJN should have hit oil and facilities instead of other ships on 2nd strike or risked the third strike

glad they didn't

There was the problem.

He WANTED that fourth carrier.

MacArthur did wreck shite all over North Korea until the Chinese got involved.

As far as importance in naval battles, Tsushima just called in to say "Herro".

If the Japanese had taken the time, flown about a mile further inland, and taken out the massive fuel depots we had at Pearl, things might have gone much, much differently. If our carriers were there AND they had taken out the fuel depots, Japan could have invaded the mainland, because we would have had no way to stop them.

That is two critical points. Our Carriers not being there and not taking out over 4 million gallons of oil that was stored above ground probably saved us.

I would say the battle of Coral Sea.

We were outnumbered

Outgunned

But full of piss and vinegar and baaaaaad intentions.

And Because it is the reason we won Midway.

Note*** It is also the 1st battle ever fought where the belligerent fleets never sighed one another. (fought entirely with aircraft)
