Japan strikes at Pearl Harbor and brings the US to its knees. Then the US has a decisive victory at Midway and thwarts Japanese expansion in the Pacific and turns WWII to the US' favor.

The battle of Midway is said to be the most decisive victory in the history of naval warfare.

Easily the most impactful since the Battle of Lepanto.

It was a major battle in a war. Not sure how that would classify it as an "F U."

Doolittle's raid was an F U.

England destroying the Spanish Armada has to rank up there.

The whole Pacific Fleet was just destroyed at Pearl Harbor then a few months later we kick their arse and stop their expansion. Not more F U than that.

A decisive ictory, but nobody knew it was the turning point at the time. Guadalcanal was still to come, with 6 months of touch and go fighting. After that, the US firmly had the initiative.

We lose on Guadalcanal and Midway is for naught.

Midway might have been the most important FU of all time.

It allowed the US to turn more to Europe.

Battle of Tours, although I think we are all being pretty liberal with FU.

Hal Halbrook almost lost the war when he told Henry Fonda not to go after the fourth Japanese carrier.

It was the biggest holy shite, it's the entire Japanese fleet, and we have the jump on them, move in WW2 if that is what you mean. We did cripple the Japanese fleet in one fell swoop but we had a bit of luck on our side. Call it karma for pearl.

Not to nitpick, but the Japanese comitted 6 carriers for the Pearl Harbor operation vs 4 for Midway, plus another one sent on a diversionary attack in the Aleutians. And the task force intended for bombarding and invading the island itself never got into action. After losing their carriers Japan called off the operation. With one US carrier sunk and the other air wings decimated, following through on the invasion plan might have paid off.

The bold stroke at Pearl Harbor was the exception rather than the rule.. Japanese commanders often showed timidity, occasionally losing their nerve on the verge of victory.

If the Japanese had taken the time, flown about a mile further inland, and taken out the massive fuel depots we had at Pearl, things might have gone much, much differently. If our carriers were there AND they had taken out the fuel depots, Japan could have invaded the mainland, because we would have had no way to stop them.

Midway is intriguing due to the long string of seemingly miraculous events that occurred in the American's favor before and during that battle. Much of the information on this battle was only released from Navy records during the 1970's.
