Nimitz, Fletcher, and Halsey and 3 of our aircraft carriers bitch slapped the Japanese Imperial Navy big time. They didn't know what hit them.

If the initial warning wasn't ignored we would have been ready. IF my aunt had nuts she's be my uncle.

Midway stunts Japanese expansion, guadalcanal is the beginning of the end for the Japanese. We ground them down on guadalcanal and bled them white. That was a much closer campaign than people realize.

The bold stroke at Pearl Harbor was the exception rather than the rule.. Japanese commanders often showed timidity, occasionally losing their nerve on the verge of victory.

I think Japanese naval commanders are slightly overrated in revisionist history. Between this episode at Midway, and the full scale retreat during the Battle of Samir in Leyte Gulf, it's hard to argue anything other than they were giant pussies.

If the Japanese had taken the time, flown about a mile further inland, and taken out the massive fuel depots we had at Pearl, things might have gone much, much differently. If our carriers were there AND they had taken out the fuel depots, Japan could have invaded the mainland, because we would have had no way to stop them.

But remember, we still would have had the Cajun Navy.

I don't consider a victory, big or small a FU. The burning of Atlanta seems to be more along the lines of an FU.

Loving these history threads. I was just hypothesizing at the bar last night. A friend of mine was going on about how Truman should have gave McArthur the reigns to wreck shite all over North Korea and we wouldn't be dealing with this shite today.

Belgium letting the salt water flood their lands during ww1

Basically told the Krauts that they would rather wreck their shite than allow Germans a chance at strategic advantage. THAT is a F U

The battle of Midway is said to be the most decisive victory in the history of naval warfare.

We got very lucky at Midway, try reading a book about it.

We had a better navy than they did. They learned that the hard way all across the Pacific.

Last Stand Of The Tin Can Sailors is one of the best books I've ever read re the Pacific naval maneuvers and one epic struggle to survive.

Nagasaki was an FU

Pretty much the single biggest FU in history.

Even after Hiroshima the Japanese still wanted to call the shots on their surrender. After the FU that was Nagasaki though, Hirohito bent the knee with the quickness.

The whole Pacific Fleet was just destroyed at Pearl Harbor then a few months later we kick their arse and stop their expansion. Not more F U than that.

That's kind of a stretch, chief. Seem to have left some very important ships.
