Watching older shows or shows portraying the 70s/80s, living in rural America looked pretty damn awesome. You knew everyone and their kids, the guys had coffee at the local diner together and told war stories, you had fairs, went to Friday night football games, etc.

Now, you go to rural America, or at least the places which I’m familiar, and it’s all dilapidated buildings and meth or heroin addicts trying to steal your shite for a quick score.

Did rural USA used to be really cool, or was that sensationalized?

Are there any spots like that left in America?

Yes. You obviously haven't considered the 40's, 50's and 60's.

Did you never watch Andy Griffith?

How old are you?

Yes, they were great at one time but the manufacturing jobs that supported those areas have mostly left leaving behind the husk.

Yes, it generally used to be nice.

I'm sure there are still some that are.

If you are ever in central LA, come check out Jena. The only small town I know of that has traffic every morning and evening when work is out. The football games are packed with the residents of the parish and everyone knows everyone. Low crime rate too. I moved here from BR and learned that not everyone is waiting to break into your vehicles.

I’m 28

I figured it had much to do with mining and manufacturing being regulated out of existence or shipped overseas.

However, I’d still like to consider retiring or moving to a place like that one day.

Suburbs were nice in the 60s and much of rural Texas is nice. City living is overrated

Good question. Interested to see the replies.

I guess if you go back far enough, the main streets of small town America were lined with new buildings. And people take care of new stuff. The people walking those streets were dressed much nicer than now. The old timers tell me that people had a lot more respect for themselves & others back then too.

No, it’s not. I’ve travelled more extensively across the US for work than most will in a long time, and I see this everywhere.

I see that, but I love the outdoors. I prefer city life at times, but I’d prefer to live rural or semi rural and travel to the city than vice versa.

Yes.

Then we started outsourcing our manufacturing for cheaper products and to fulfill a globalist agenda. It killed smaller/mid sized manufacturing and main street retail simultaneously in the midwest.

In the lower delta, mechanized agriculture destroyed a lot of smaller towns and displaced a lot of African Americans to larger industrial towns like St. Louis, Chicago, Memphis, or Cincy.

Right now, the nicest "small towns" are often in larger metropolitan areas or have an economic link to a tourism or higher ed.

My only experiences of rural America in the 60-80s are Hollywood dramatizations. My lived experiences are not what I’d consider envious.

Drive through most small towns and that dilapidated Main Street at one time was very nice and was actually alive with people.
