Mainly looking for older folks' opinions. Being a 90s kid, the internet was always there, but didn't become omnipresent until later. The awful dialup sound and limiting your family's phone time wasn't worth extended use. I'd say things were better from my limited sample size: there's something to be said for not having all this information at your fingertips and having to work to learn things and improve yourself. Also I think it's cool that some things remained a mystery: it builds your imagination; now we have to to know everything about every person, event, etc. Not even getting into current inanities with social media cancel culture

Yes and no. The internet brought a lot of positives, including easy access to information, connection with far-flung social ties, the ability to find online community, reduced transaction costs, increased capacity for data storage, increased ability to collaborate across time and space, and opportunities to engage in political and/or civic discussion.

But there are downsides to all of these points, including the prevalence of misinformation, the erosion of face-to-face connection and local community, economic threats to small businesses, threats to privacy, the loss of leisure time due to work-from-home demands, and political polarization resulting from contentious conversations.

Life was very nice no CNN, Cells, computers. Respect

We never bothered Blacks they did not bother us, we passd each other without a mean word. We respected each other., Parents chose to teach their kids, respect

Gaming on 56k and directly above developed a real camaraderie as well. You were really out there suffering with your brethren in long arse lobby lines

It's pretty awesome to have the answers to everything at your finger tips, but it sucks when you're hanging out with a group and everyone is just staring at their phones wondering what everybody else they know is doing.

I'm 30 and I've started making a very conscious effort to limit my phone time.

Society? Absolutely.

But the amount of info available is addicting.

I’m 33 and I don’t have cassettes, but I’ve got books everywhere. I can’t stand electronic books.

Of course there are pros and cons but society would be a lot better off if people got their information from books in a library rather than from the internet.

I never once witnessed any racial strife, probably because people weren't so hypersensitive about everything. If you just go about your lives without politicizing everything like we did in the 80s and 90s, there's not much chance for strife. I remember hearing about national outrages like Rodney King and some neo-Nazi incidents, but they were definitely the exception

A few years ago I would have
said the post-Internet was better. But now I think it is really starting to devolve society.

Social media is the problem, not the internet.

The internet is freakin awesome.
