How about you start your research with the labor treasury certificates his government issued that allowed Nazi Germany to climb out of an economic depression many times worse than the one we Americans were suffering with throughout the 30s? There are many, many reasons that he shouldn't be discounted in a discussion of who was the "greatest statesman of all time," that is but one of several examples that show he's in the running. A maniac, undoubtedly. Genius? Perhaps that too. He's not exactly admirable but he deserves more credit than he gets.

Yes, let's discuss his economic "miracles" and the fact that he was borrowing and using so much money to rearm that the economic revival experienced in pre-war Germany would have eventually collapsed as Hitler's economic policies were entirely dependent not only on war, but a successful prosecution of war, and without that the German economy would have eventually crumbled. German economic officers were already warning Hitler about the impending collapse as early as 1937/1938. They knew the entire economic boom was really an illusion and without military conquest it was bound to collapse.

Gotta love those state run welfare programs, state run health insurance, state run Autobahn jobs project, and state-run life that Hitler provided.

Hooray for socialism!

That's true, but they also set about doing so as soon as they could. And they conquered/looted a massive amount of territory at an unprecedented rate. Say what you want but they knew what they needed to do and began doing it as soon as they could. Like I said, it isn't exactly admirable. But it was pragmatic. And the reason we view them in a negative light is almost entirely because we opposed them and they lost. Hell, even Patton said that we fought the wrong enemy towards the end of the war. He favored making common cause with the Nazis and going to war with the Soviets.

You can't really judge Hitler, who is to say that the Nazi culture was any less valid than any other culture?

And Hitler did have his lighter side with his art and attempts at comedy.

Stalin made Hitler look like a rank amateur, but evil is evil.

Mao, is by far the go to guy in term of numbers of people killed.

Just to illustrate how different people will defend just about anybody, this is from the Wikipedia article on Mao:

quote:

Supporters credit him with driving imperialism out of China,[3] modernising China and building it into a world power, promoting the status of women, improving education and health care, and increasing life expectancy as China's population grew from around 550 million to over 900 million during the period of his leadership.

Wikipedia Mao article

So, I guess the theory is he was a net positive on the population?

Well Joseph Stalin was just as evil he killed many more than Hitler. Some estimates say he killed nearly 30 million people.

Mao Zedong murdered between 40-50 million Chinese when he introduced communism.

No he's not, the Mongols killed as many as 100 million people while Ghengis Khan

That's not even close to accurate. Sure, people have claimed it, but that doesn't make it true. The chroniclers claimed that random cities in Uzbekistan had 3 million residents.

Also, there weren't that many Mongols. They've done logistics on some of the Mongol "massacres" and found that a lot of the reported stuff would be physically impossible.

Wrong - Stalin had way more people killed than Hitler! Stalin however didn't have global domination in mind so we teamed up with him and, Great Britain to defeat Hitler.

Directly responsible
Hitler- 7 million Jews and 6 million others
Stalin- 20-30 million eastern Europeans and Russian citizens.
Mao- 40-50 million Chinese

He probably would have raised the worldwide standard of living by A TON but he was just to ambitious and moved too quickly. Sure it would have sucked for those who got exterminated but for the rest of us life would probably be better these days.
