Was Hitler an uncommon surname?

Such that those of Austrian-German descent are fortunate that there weren't a lot of people forced to carry that name in the generations subsequent to Adolph coming along?
Or did a lot of people with that surname choose to change it in some manner, so that they wouldn't?
I'm just wondering because I've never heard of another person with that surname.

If my last name was Hitler I’d change it, even now. Imagine how bad it was 50+ years ago baw.

because the name Hitler is in fact a misspelling of the names Hiedler or Hüttler/Huettler, It happened when Alois Schicklgruber, Adolf Hitler’s father, adopted the surname of his foster father, Johann Georg Hiedler (also spelt Hüttler), which by a clerk’s mistake became Hitler.

Interesting and thanks. Certainly fortuitous for that original family name. It would suck to think that someone with my name could have been such a gigantic worldwide frickstick that everybody thereafter would have to lose the family name and go by something else.

Alois Hitler was born illegitimately, and his paternity was never established. This led to claims that his wife Klara (Adolf's mother) may have been his cousin. It also meant that Adolf Hitler could not prove who his grandfather was and thus prove his own "Aryan descent". When Alois was promoted in the Customs service, he applied to be legitimised in the name of his stepfather Hiedler, which was entered in the register as 'Hitler', for unknown reasons. Alois had a poor relationship with Adolf, who rebelled against him.
Alois Hitler was born Alois Schicklgruber.

There’s a guy at my grandmas church who’s first name is Adolf. She grew up in a German town in Wisconsin and she and him were both born before the Second World War for what it’s worth.

By pretty much all accounts, he didn't.

I’m sure the dictator had a bunch of bastard kids running around, assuming his micro penis worked.

There are a few in St. Louis but they spell it Hittler.

I don't think Hitler was all that uncommon until Adolph ruined it. Lots of people changed their surnames during and after the war to escape vilification for simply sharing a name with a genocidal dictator hellbent on world domination.
