It's always been the heads of the Gambino and Genovese families

Not true. After the Commission trial, Joe Massino was the most powerful only because the Bonnano's had been kicked off the Commission.

well that and the other families were banned from doing business with them. BUt the Bonnanos still were not the most Powerful and neither was joey. chin was still running things and the genovesse family was and will remain the most powerful. The only time this has not been true was under Carlos Gambino and even then its debatable.

Carlos was very powerful at one time, so was santos. Mainly because of reasons explained above.

I think a lot of stories about him were exaggerated and it was on purpose, to deflect. A lot of movers and shakers, and a lot of the other families operations in the area did not want their power to be public knowledge.

Of course now its impossible to keep anything under wraps.

but Carlos negotiated a deal making New Orleans, essentially a branch of the Genovese family.

In my little research I've done; Carlos made no deal whatsoever with anyone.

That was a right guaranteed to the New Orleans don by the leaders back home in Sicily. If true, and he was untouchable; it was even estimated that his business made 1B in the '60s and 70s. 1B is allot of zeros now.

At the time he had Kennedy killed you could say he was the most powerful man in America.

Of all the conspiracies, this one makes the most sense. He had both killed imo, for deporting him.

He was soo much more than a produce dealer, I assure you.

While Marcello's influence and stature as a Mafia leader was well-known to both his underworld colleagues and Federal and State authorities by the early 1960's, another significant aspect of his careers--his relationship with the Maria's national governing commission-was not confirmed until several years later. While it was known that the New Orleans Mafia had been the first branch of the Mafia in America (the Sicilian La Cosa Nostra had entered the United States through the port of New Orleans during the 1880's) whether it had extraordinary special privileges within the national syndicate had long been mystery. During the late 1960's the FBI learned new and sub- stantive information regarding its unique position. Sensitive Bureau reports on La Cosa Nostra set forth the details obtained from a highly reliable source. Among them were the following: * * * he learned that the first "family" of what has now become known as La Cosa Nostra (LCN) came from Sicily and settled in New Orleans * * * the source noted that inasmuch as this "family" was the predecessor of all subsequent "families," it has been afforded the highest respect and esteem, and because of its exalted position, the New Orleans "family" could make decisions on its own without going to the "Commission." (36) * * * the source learned that the New Orleans "family" could have, on its own, "opened the books," [admitting new members into the organization] but because of the tact and diplomacy of Carlos Marcello he sought "Commission" approval in making new "soldiers," which the "Commission" naturally granted * * *.(37)

Not making this shite up. Just what I read. Don't know the exact source; but they have a shitload of information on this dude.

I'm not saying he was.

I would just like to know how a man with that much money, political clout, and means to kill the president of the US; wouldn't be.

Other than the one word "no" answers.

TIA

This helped him get the top position in New Orleans. When Silver Dollar was going to be deported, Marcello got the top position in New Orleans over Carolla's son mainly due to the backing of the Commission in New York. Having Costello's slots down here probably also helped him as well.
