Update. These things are garbage.
Wife took it to end of neighborhood. Lost signal after 8/10th Of a mile……20 miles my arse.

Anyone ever use these for kids under 12 years old to keep tabs on them in the neighborhood?

Maybe let my kids know when dinner is etc?

Seems like a good idea but I’ve read that pervs can get info.

Do you have to speak in code etc?

Can dudes find a way to talk to them only and not have me hear it?

We s there anything that I don’t know that you all know…..overall safe or overall don’t do it.

For sure, anyone who attended the Garth Brooks concert in Tiger Stadium will be trying to use these walkie talkies to groom your kids .

I use them at my camp when the kids are running around (7/8). Theres a large ditch in the back that they like to go see that drains into the bay. I let them haul arse and call if they need anything. Besides that, come home when its dark

I don't know about using fancy ones like that. But I bought a set of 4 walkie talkies for my boys. They use them when running around the house having nerf or water balloon wars.

I never really thought to check their range though.

I doubt groomers and pedos are scoping out neighborhoods with wide ranging Radio Shack Walker talkies for naive kids. Seems that the internet would provide better results for the pedofile.

Maybe, but just stay a mile or two away from perv-centric areas and you should be fine. IE Disney, public schools, etc...

Sorry.

I’m asking if there is a way for them to communicate to them without me knowing.

I can see where they happen on our chosen channel. Say…. 7:3. Sit there and hear me say
“David jr, come home”.
Then he says, later,
“David jr, come to the soccer field”.

I’d hear it. But….

What are the safety issues that I don’t know about?

Most family radios made over the past 20 years support privacy codes, make sure to enable it

My kids got some cheap Chinese ones for Christmas and within 5m of playing with them some dude was talking to them in a creepy Santa voice

Back in my day, we ran or biked around the entire neighborhood (and sometimes beyond) all day without a word to or from a parent. We came home for lunch and dinner.

But this is 2022, and mental illness is no longer treated or locked up. Those days are over.

I think it was Chris Rock who talked about the days when the different kids were all in the same classroom together, got out of school a few minutes early, and rode a different bus in case one of ‘em went crazy.

My neighbors use them, but I dont think they let the kids use them at home. Just when they go to the pool, so they can tell them to come home.

We use those exact radios at our camp. The kids (including other camp kids) all have them and us adults have them to radio them when we need them back. They love it.

We use the relay it is a 4g walkie variation that only connects with me, my kids, and my wife. It has GPS and if my kids key it up 5 times it goes into panic mode

I did a cursory search - this is a relay review

The service is $10/month per unit.
