BREC has its own dedicated millages and is flush with cash because the voters keep renewing their property taxes. They have more money than they know what to do with, so they're using it to build more and bigger complexes. One project that most believed would be a boondoggle was Liberty Lagoon, but it has proven to be a revenue raiser rather than a drain on resources. The same has been true for the big baseball complex near Gardere.

All of this is about elephants, remember that.

I don't think either of those locations are big enough.

The River District property isn't even close... City Park golf course is closer, but still a lot smaller than the current footprint.

It seems that Brec and other EBRP non profits get around metro council control by becoming a state non profit group.

This the golden rule in EBRP.
After you find an idea set it up as a nonprofit where the metro council cannot touch your money.
1) tax whitey
2) make restless natives happy
3) have nonprofit make t-shirts on the tax payer whitey's dime , give t-shirts to restless natives to show up in a mandatory day care bus to a council meeting (too bad their grandkids and kids cannot show up to ride this bus to mandatory daycare), and promise a lot, do alittle, pocket the rest of the money!

Tigerdroppings needs a EBRP nonprofit so we can have dedicated people monitor the news and give us the cliff notes on it.

That's Cypress Mounds, a private venture, nothing to do with BREC.

The problem with this whole idea is everything being voted on is pure speculation. No land approved for zoo relocation, no funds guaranteed by private donors and no true estimate of cost to taxpayers. Everything should be voted down based on those simple facts.

The actual space where the zoo presently sits is only about 1500ft x 1500ft at its widest points. If could easily be redesigned to accommodate any of those spaces.

Move it! The BR Zoo deserves to have a better location. It's run its course at its current location. That same location is growing into a bigger cesspool by the day.

And.....
quote:

NBR, the zoo would not have to move if the people of NBR would support it. Guess what the numbers show people in NBR do not support the zoo because it cost money to get in and there's limits on what can be stolen from a zoo.

And.....
quote:

And people outside of NBR aren't going to come to risk their lives or get robbed and support/visit a zoo in that shithole area. Not sorry because it's true. Without "Whitey's" financial support, the BR Zoo at its current location, will begin dying on the vine.

This is a classic gem from the racist NBR "gub'ment" peeps......
quote:

Many north Baton Rouge political leaders have pushed back against the possibility of losing the zoo, saying it would be yet another blow to the side of town that has drawn little development and lost many amenities over the past few decades.

Here's a little hint for you assclown politicians of NBR....."nawth batun'rudge" is ALREADY a zoo thanks to all of that "democrat" culcha.

One day those dumbasses will realize with whom and where the everyday problems lay. Anyone with a functioning brain can see why businesses and families move out of certain areas in cities all across the country.

OH whatever dude... Its not a trip to a zoo unless you get shot, stabbed, or carjacked. That's what makes zoos interesting.

Funny story. On a field trip 15+ years ago over the summer, our daycare suv was stolen from the parking lot while we were in the BR Zoo. I remember having to wait for what seemed like hours for a ride to get us back home.

not for this new greenwood project. Private business support and likely more taxes would be needed to fully complete the project as it is designed, so says the brec head.

I agree, but if there is any government agency in BR to get the job done it's BREC. They do a good job with the parks. On a much smaller scale, the improvements to the Burbank dog park has been amazing, and relatively quick moving.

Yeah, pretty much, but 95% of the property that flooded in August has never flooded before and may never flood again.

The Greenwood project is nothing but a hush puppy being thrown to the SJW's to placate them so that they can move the zoo. There's plenty of money for the zoo, but not for that boondoggle, which will be immediately scaled back tremendously (if it even happens at all), once the movement of the zoo is finalized.

near Laberge off of Nicholson. Those locations are awful, possibly worse than where it is now.

Why is that awful?

It might not be ideal but you think a zoo near LSU on the south side by Nicholson could be worse than where it is now? Wtf no

The properties off Gardere, Airline, and O'Neal where they have proposed moving the zoo to all flood every time there's a hard rain

Not sure why BR needs a zoo in the first place.

Oh I know, just thought it was a funny timing to talk about areas "never" flooding again

They should, what with their almost $100 million budget.

City park is plenty big enough for a small zoo that focuses on certain areas of education. We don't need elephants, we need an awesome reptile and insect venue, we need some bears and tigers with some nice monkey exhibits.. you couple this with turning the ninth hole into an amphitheater, beefing up the art museum and adding a bridge to the knock knock museum. Then you have a really nice public space that will attract visitors year round

I think Mary Manheim nailed it in this letter to the editor from the Baton Rouge Advocate:

Why the zoo should stay put

I agree with her. The infrastructure is in place, the area where the zoo is unique, and BREC has not done anything to prove they can run a zoo correctly so why give them a new "toy to break"?

I don't care if they build the new Disney land over there. No way in hell would I bring my family over in that area. Move the damn thing
