This whole thing is so messed up. The limits on emissions in the USA is ridiculous. Hopefully MAGA will make some changes.

Funny thing is that it's much more environmentally taxing to replace that many cars, than it would have been to just keep them on the road

You don't have to get the fix or trade it in.

First, let's not overlook the fact that you will never get a value this great again. No one outside of VW will pay you "pre-scandal" money for your vehicle. So you'd be stupid not to take part of it. They are giving 5k above value basically.
Second, how do you people figure you can "just keep driving it as is". Do you never have to get inspections (some places actually check emissions outside of LA and the know the trick to the cheat now). On top of that it'll be pretty easy to confirm if you got the fix or not through paperwork. If the EPA went so far as they did to get a company to buy back billions of dollars worth of cars, you think they can't put a hold on some models being able to renew registration? And when it finally is time to get a new vehicle, say when your TDI has 200k miles on it. You probably could have sold that for at least a little before. Now, who's gonna touch it if they know it's not street legal.
Yes you can still drive it, but you can do a lot of things that are against the law if you want to. Many of them would be financially stupid as this would. To those keeping their vehicles until the grace period, that's a personal decision. I'd at least get my buyback offer and not schedule my appointment or something (not sure if you have to do it in so many days after the offer though). Reason being, insurance will not pay what VW did if you total it. Having the offer with a stated value seems like something you can lean on to show insurance that the only true replacement cost is that exact value.
For me, I was ready for something a little bigger (kid in the back of a jetty is doable, but tight. And I work in sales, so it's easier to take someone to lunch in a bigger car). Plus I'm on track for around 25k per year in miles right now. Didn't want to lessen the buyback number

There's fundamentally something wrong with our government when we are forced to get a fix and reduce our gas mileage. Diesels are popular in every other developed country but our damn regulations keep them out of the US market.

Has anyone accepted the offer for the fix? I see a lot that accepted trade in.
If you've accepted the fix, doesn't this come with a check for your troubles? Interested to see if anyone has received this offer in full yet.

The fix does come with compensation, however, there is no approved fix for pre-2015 2.0 or any the 3.0L yet.

Yeah I can't believe the government would ever do anything to help protect the environment. What Assholes.

All will be sold in Mexico and Central America.
So the excess emissions from these vehicles will still get into the atmosphere, just somewhere else.
In the Cash for Clunkers program (2008-ish?), the Feds scrapped the vehicles they bought.

If I'm understanding right your saying that if you choose the fix and payment rather than tradein then you can basically keep driving your vehicle until/if a fix is presented.
Do you receive payment upon accepting this offer or do you wait?

Correct. You received payment once the fix is implemented in your car or turn the car in.
All these TDI being turned in are going to be scrapped.

Why wouldn't you keep it until the last minute? They are good cars, comfortable, get really good mpg, etc
The buyback situation gets extremely murky if a TDI is totaled after the settlement date. We were looking for a new vehicle, but based on the amount offered and the unknowns with what would happen in the event of it being totaled, decided to sell it back ASAP.

OR they'll implement the fix and sell. I was told they will not allow them to be shipped as is to other countries.

Yea you're definitely taking a risk by riding it till the last day.
I'm going to hope it doesn't happen and if it does I'm going to hope my insurance company steps up to the plate. As long as I'm working where I am now, this is the best vehicle I can possibly own for my needs.

I'm in the same boat. Bought this 2014 JSW with 6500 miles on it a year ago for a great price. I've put another 17K on it, driving mostly alone back and forth FL to Baton Rouge but also a few road trips loaded down with passengers and a crapload of stuff. It's a great car for me right now. I know I will probably eventually take the buyback (they will pay me more than I paid for the car...) but I'm in no rush to replace it.
And honestly the thought of hundreds of thousands of these perfectly good cars getting crushed makes me sick. That's more harmful to the environment than the level of NOX they are emitting.

damn, I never knew the tdi got better mileage than most hybrids. Makes me want one now.

Posted on 1/26/17 at 8:39 am to Napoleon
Not only does it get better mileage but it's nice inside and fast as frick compared to other economy-minded cars.
Mind has a 6 speed manual and is actually somewhat fun to drive sometimes
It's still slow, but compared to a 4 banger Toyota Corolla it's a rocket ship. And 48 mpg at 80mph is incredible.

If it's just a software issue that defeats compliance machines, why the hell would one give the car back and forsake 45 miles to the gallon? F that. I'd keep that car and roll with the 45 miles to the gallon. F the feds.
Posted on 1/26/17 at 9:53 am to T Blair
It's more than that for some models. Some need an SCR system added which is a very extensive modification. The cost of retrofit is likely to exceed the value of the car.

And then get popped for having an unregistered vehicle that doesn't pass inspections.
The reason everyone is sending their cars back is because only a dumbass would pass on it. VW is offering several thousand above market value.
