And West Lafayette (Purdue ~ 50,000 students) -- 0.87

To be fair, Lafayette, where I live, across the river, is higher than I would have guessed, at 5.17.

Do metro areas. 900,000 in Baton Rouge.

Most of the SEC markets are mid-sized cities. Defined as 75k to 500k.

BR isn't uniquely urban over many of them.

And our metro population consists of people living in St Francisville, Greensburg etc. Places that aren't really even that close to BR. BR is very comparable in size to many of these metros

Lexington - 517k
Knoxville - 868k
Columbia, SC - 829k
Gainesville - 332k
Fayetteville - 560k

Isn't the BR population less than a quarter million? Hardly a big city, we all know the issue, just can't say it. ??

Knoxville at the top is also a surprise

I think it’s possible to get a false sense of security there. I took a wrong turn there after dark and there are some rough areas near the nice ones.

Should include Bryan w College Station

Bryan is 5.09, I was curious so looked it up (as you’re right it should be included w/College Station)

There are parts of Bryan that are pretty rough for an area the size of BCS but they are mostly north Bryan farther away from campus, or at least when I was in school. We regularly left our door unlocked in college and I can only think of one or two times where friends of mine had their cars broken into

Lexington has about the same demographics that BR did 50 years ago. Not surprising to me.

I think the one that surprised me the most is Fayetteville.

Google says Nashville proper is about 658,000 people with 105 homicides last year. Baton Rouge is about 225,000 with 135 homicides.

What sort of “violence” is making the per capita violent crime rates of the two cities basically equal?

Athens has hard core gehto projects inside its current area of campus and off campus surroundings.

I don’t know what to say about that but the crime has adjusted to take advantage of students.

900,000 isn’t close to 500,000 or 300,000. Nice try though.

The actual area around BR, including the immediate suburbs is about 500-600k. That 870k includes a bunch of places that are 40 minutes to an hour away

is this the first/only example of a suburb surpassing the original main city in population?
