Does anyone know what the highest number drafted was? 150? 175? It's below 201 because I entered my brother's birthday and it said he would not have been drafted.
I think the cutoff varied from year to year based on estimated troop needs, but I'm not positive.

Other than talking heads there was never any serious discussion about a draft. Maybe in the initial weeks after 9/11 but that was all initial freak out reaction.

Pretty much but I think it did increase the second or third year from the previous year but then it went down every year after that.

There was some solace in knowing that by staying in school you could at least defer it for a while in hopes of the war being ended.
Dick Cheney could probably explain that maneuver as well as anyone. The secret is that while you're in college stringing out your student deferment, get married and have a couple of kids. The next thing you know ... no vietnam!!!

That was my year. My number was well over 300. Both the day before and the day after were < 100.

I just watched a few youtube videos of the live tv broadcast of the draft lottery.
I felt sick thinking about having to watch that in real time as a draft eligible guy during the war.
My dad told me his story of that night. He was eligible and before the draft had heard something along the lines of if your number was 200 or lower you would likely be called into service (obviously the lower the number the more likely that would happen). He was watching it and his number came up....80!
He was in school so he was deferred. Ultimately he reported for training, but never had to go to Vietnam.
I can't imagine the anxiety of watching your life being potentially taken out of your control.
Just checked. My number would have been 18
