Anyone over 196 would have been safe the entire draft system was in place for Vietnam.

If you were above 196 and above you are safe.

Key: N69 gives the results of the lottery held on December 1, 1969, for men born from 1944 through 1950. The highest lottery number called for this group was 195; all men assigned that lottery number or any lower number, and who were classified as available for military service, were called to report for possible induction.
•N70 gives the results of the lottery held on July 1, 1970, for men born in 1951. The highest lottery number called for this group was 125; all men assigned that lottery number or any lower number, and who were classified as available for military service, were called to report for possible induction.
•N71 gives the results of the lottery held on August 5, 1971, for men born in 1952. The highest lottery number called for this group was 95; all men assigned that lottery number or any lower number, and who were classified as available for military service, were called to report for possible induction.
•N72 gives the results of the lottery held on February 2, 1972, for men born in 1953. This lottery was conducted for men who would have been called in 1973; however, no new draft orders were issued after 1972

Your draft number
278
was not called in 1970.
If your birthday was just 1 day earlier, your draft number would have been called.

He was in school so he was deferred. Ultimately he reported for training, but never had to go to Vietnam.
Wasn't he in the guard for awhile?

By the way, one of the biggest lies about The Vietnam War is that our army was made up of a bunch of scared, dope smoking draftees who had no desire to fight and we're only there because they were forced to go. The truth of the matter is only 25% of the troops in Vietnam were drafted. The other 75% enlisted voluntarily.
For comparison, almost 70% of all American troops in World War II were drafted.

My number was called, but I was 9. I was the first year of guys who had to register for Jimmy Carter's draft sign-up.

316, would not have been drafted.
Dad volunteered, though looking at his number, he would not have been drafted. Luckily he stayed in ROTC at LSU and went in as an officer, and not cannon fodder.
