They were testing the rocket which requires a payload. Typically concrete is used but Musk opted for sending a Tesla instead.

Serious question? Any idea how much of your daily life requires things that we have put into space? TV, communications, GPS, imaging, national security, etc. It's pretty important to make things substantially cheaper.

too bad the 3rd rocket crashed. It's still a momentous day in space history but if the 3rd rocket had landed on the ocean pad that would've made it even more amazing.

For one, the rockets having the ability to land after use means that its reusable and drastically cuts down time between launches. Also, the current price for getting a payload into space is ~$10k/pound of cargo. The price for the Falcon is ~$1k/pound. It makes space more accessible and faster. Plus this is just one step closer to having a vehicle capable of sending a mission to the moon and beyond. The Falcon heavy is basically just 3 Falcon 9s strapped together, which raises the possibility that there could be more of them strapped together to increase the payload even further.
Now we need to start working on an orbiting manufacturing facility. It's ultimately too expensive to rely on going from ground to space; if we can build facilities in space or on the moon and use asteroids as the raw materials we'll reach the goal of multi-planetary species.

They proved they can deliver heavy items (satellites, secret shite, etc) into orbit cheaper then before. They will soon be ready to deliver real payloads to space and will be paid well to do it.
They also proved they are on the path to being able to deliver heavy stuff to mars.
They also proved they can re land the rocket boosters and use them again which is theoretically a cost saving benefit.
They also proved they are one step closer to being able to deliver people to space for any reason including tourism. They want to do a manned flight next.
They proved a private company with a little help can do all this.
Lastly, they proved if you are innovative and have a dream you can make it happen.
I think they proved a lot and I hope some kids saw how cool and absurd this was and get interested in a science career. It is just plain cool they sent a red convertible to space and it will orbit for millions of years.
