Found the dam being overwhelmed video. Near the end you can see it starting to come down.

May be a dumb question, but why is there a camera at that spot recording 24/7?
It's at a port. From one of the translated X captions, the mudslide happened at the port facility of Shingaste City, China. While there are over 700k people living there, the mudslide seems to have been concentrated to that area.

That is pure, unadulterated nightmare fuel

Steep hillsides. That water just keep accelerating downhill at any narrowing. Scary as shite

eems like even if you have been given 5-10 minutes (which seems almost impossible anyway), you'd still have had no chance to make it to a safe spot.
Only way would be to start trying to climb those mountains as best you could. And you'd have to anticipate what that warning even meant.

Damn. Life is so fragile.
Grim reminder of how insignificant we are.

my old chinese history teacher told us on the first day of class if we don't know the answer to a blue book question about why an empire fell
just to guess that a river changed course and at least 500k died, then the people decided he was no longer divinely chosen. If you say under 100k, you will be wrong because chinese people don't care about 100k dead.
The death tolls in ancient China's disasters were always insane. Yellow River changed course, 500k dead. 7 million died due to famine. Emperor overthrown.

Now imagine the power of this x100,000. The Missoula Floods make this look like a garden hose. That's not to discount the tragedy of this at all as those are fellow human beings we are watching being killed, but it is something to put in context. As crazy as these videos are, things can get a lot worse.
