A death-defying escape was captured on video as a man scaled 15 stories down a West Philadelphia high-rise during a fire Thursday night.

The fire started at a trash receptacle at an apartment building on 4445 Holden Street around 9:30 p.m., sending smoke throughout the high-rise. Residents were evacuated from the building as firefighters checked the floors to get people out.

As SkyForce10 flew over the scene, a man was spotted climbing down outside the building. While it took a little less than three minutes for the man to make his way down to safety, it felt like an eternity for those who watched.

"He climbed about 200 feet down on what looked like basically chain-link fencing and then the railings of each apartment building," SkyForce10 pilot Jeremy Haas said.

Once the man reached the ground he was greeted by waiting police officers before walking away. He did not appear to be hurt.

The heat from fire will push you out by any means necessary, including jumping. It turned this guy into Spider-Man.

It's amazing how bad the load times are on internet videos not named YouTube.

Local news websites are the worst with all of their clickbait and cluttered pages. Not only does it take forever to load, but then you usually have to sit through a long commercial when it does.

Wondering the same. And could he not have punched through after he went down 1 floor?

Props to him though, impressive work.

Making that climb down is the very definition of the words death grip.

This was in West Philly, it said it was basically chain link fence all the way down. I'm guessing the chain link fence was the equivalent of bars on the windows

Do fire departments still have those trampoline like carb devices for these types of situations?

Haha the local reports are like "yeah not sure why he had to do that since most people escaped via the stairs..."

Guy is probably a rock climber who is like "MY DESTINY HAS COME"
