Hopefully everyone was safe in their basements

Funny you say this.

Our smart parish government told us on the bayou to get in our basements or cellars.

He’s actually an incredibly talented tradesman. But I did chuckle at your joke.

How did Gretna do?

My folks in Bellemeade North are good and didn't have any damage. Sounds like the tornado was struggling and didn't do too much damage until it hit the river.

A good friend of mine is on the St. Bernard Search and Rescue truck for the Fire Department here, his wife is in the phone with mine as I type this and he told her that there is 1 confirmed dead and a little boy missing right now in Arabi

Crazy. I didn't even hear it uptown. I was grinding on some work I missed today and started seeing our work groupchat blow up after it was over. I didn't even know it was coming or hit.

Horrible. Judging from that video and the path it might get much worse.

How many homes in the path of that thing have basements? Pretty much zero? What the frick would you even do if in the path of that thing without a way to get below ground...damn.

We're talking about this in the weather thread now. This is what I posted there:

quote:

Interior room on the lowest floor. No windows. Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Find something to cover your head, a helmet is preferable, but anything will help. Grab a mattress if you have to and have the time. Turn the sound up on the TV or take your phone with you. If you normally watch someone like Ryan Hall or another streamer, don't when you're in a warning. Change to your local met coverage.

Most tornadoes are survivable if you follow a similar plan.

ETA: Seriously, spend the $40 and purchase a weather radio. It has battery backup and doesn't rely on cell service. It will be rolling even when the power is out and cell towers have been damaged.

It was added to wear hard soled shoes, get your wallet/keys, and have something like an air horn to help locate you if you become trapped.

Would be terrifying to think that you're really not in a good spot and your life may just be decided on what path that thing takes.

It's scary enough when you have a basement or sturdy building that could withstand a hit...but those houses down there built on blocks and shite.
